HST Braking

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

HST Braking

Post by MC2C1 »

I am interested to find out how you can edit the gauges in the rolling stock in Rail Simulator.
I am lead to believe that the HST brake pipe shows gauges display inaccurate pressures when the brakes are called for.

I am not a driver or have no hands on knowledge of HSTs, but from observing them I believe that the pressures in the brake pipe are as followed:

Release: 5.1bar
Full Service: 3bar
Emergency: 0bar

The Rail Simulator HSTs pressures drop below 3 bar when a full service application is applied.

Also, can you add notched braking steps in the Sim?
I believe an HST uses Straight Air/7-step Westcode technology, so the brake handle should look like this.

Release [5.1 bar]
Service 1 [???]
Service 2 [???]
Service 3 [???]
Service 4 [???]
Service 5 [3 bar]
Emergency [0 bar]

Any feedback would be great!

Thanks. :D

It might be possible to edit the simulation files to get a brake pipe pressure of 3 bar with a full application, rather than editing the gauge. However that might upset the braking performance which I understand most believe to be about right.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem possible to add notched braking steps in the Sim as there doesn't seem to be provision for "named" brake handle positions that would have a specified brake pipe pressure or pressure drop assigned to them. There is however a solution, which worked for me, for the lack of graduated release on the HST brake here:

Regrettably posts regarding "Physics" issues don't seem to attract any response from RSDL, either here or on their own site's forum, whereas other problems seem to get helpful official replies. It leaves me wondering whether they are struggling to get to grips with how to sort out such glaring inaccuracies as much as some of us users are!
