KRS So Far...

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

KRS So Far...

Post by ka959 »

I've spent a goodly few hours sitting here with KRS, although I did get it within days of it being released, but so far have had no real time to potter around with it before now. And after comparing it to MSTS and TRS 2004/2006, I do indeed do like what I see.

I've managed to do a few things with it to familarise myself with the works, and although I do find it slightly more difficult compared to TRS, where creating routes, comes into it, I still find it interesting, and the learning curve isn't too steep either. I'll get there in due course I guess.

Just a query to see if anyone knows the answers to these questions: Will industrial operations similar to TRS2004/2006 be somewhere on the horizon ? This could be most interesting methinks, provided it's going to be possible. Also, is it likely that we'll be able to simulate loaded freightcars, as in MSTS, by altering a file similar to editing the .wag files ? Thirty empty large EWS coal hoppers isn't much of a load for a pair of 47 Class diesels, and I want to give them something to really pull, without having to create a train at least a couple of kilometres or more long !! (or hopefully, someone will create a visibily loaded coal car) Would KRS rail vehicles actually have proper physics as most MSTS wagons seem to these days ?

Will others out there be starting to create content for KRS like they do for MSTS and TRS ? I'd love to see a larger variety of lineside objects of all sorts, and everything in between where possible, so there's a huge choice of all things possible to allow you to create routes that make you feel at home, or close to it ???

The only thngs currently bugging me, are the fact that unlike TRS and MSTS, you just can't see the current indication of how a set of points are facing, without having to go to the Map View, and taking your concentration off driving for a short while. Some points seem to fail to change while I'm approaching, and I end up having to go really slow just to be able to avoid going too far before needing to reverse back and look closely at the points to be sure they've actually changed to the direction I want the train to go.

I kinda miss the inability to do industrial work like coal loading and unloading, and setting up a Power Station and coal mine etc. but hopefully it'll all come along sooner or later. This is what I've been waiting for for a long time, although I have enjoyed MSTS, and moreso, TRS2004/2006 until KRS came along. But will it mean I'll have to wait, and obtain a copy of the USA version of KRS before I can run any American routes at all ? Or will official content be available to download, plus a patch to allow USA stuff to run on the British version of KRS ? MSTS did both first-off with the Settle & Carlisle and NorthEast Corridor routes, but It should NOT mean we have to be forced to purchase what's essentially the same thing again just to be able to run American stuff, and see other routes etc. I'm interested in knowing the opinions of others who own KRS, and what they think of it so far, once they pick up a few things and are becoming happier with using it.

Regards...

All of the above come with the sim as standard.

That would depend on your definition of "proper physics"!

There is already a lot of custom content available, with much more currently under construction.

The blue line shown on the 2D map and driver guide indicates the path which is set for your train, and therefore the direction the points are set to, although I would like to see an option for TRS-style arrows in both the 2D map and the 3D environment to make shunting and path-setting a much quicker process.

As mentioned above, this is all available out of the box.

If you have the original Rail Simulator then there is no need to buy the US version. The US route and Class 08 shunter will be available for purchase as a DVD or downloadable expansion pack from Just Trains in the coming week or two, although at £19.99 the price takes the proverbial biscuit IMO, considering the full sim is available for £5 more. However I suspect many people will choose forfeit the excellent Class 08 and simply buy the US version of the sim instead of the expansion pack, as this gives them a backup DVD to install from when their original dies or breaks from over-use.

Coal loading and unloading, container and log loading and unloading all in one route.

That's the EU compatible version, the latest US compatible is PO&N US2 at http://www.train-sim.com .
