Goodbye to you all

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

My computer was hit with some spyware that all but made it impossible to use. I took it to my local shop and they fixed it for £30. I wouldn't go to PC World if it was the last shop in the country. Rip-off merchants.

Had a similar problem with my last machine - everyone said it was a Windows/spyware problem, and on the basis of probability, I'm sure they were right to go for those first. But I called in a friendly neighbourhood computer fixit specialist and he found it was a failure of one of the cooling fans. Because there were several (three I think he said) there was no obvious difference in the noise when the machine was working, but the fan which cooled the CPU had died - result, the CPU was running hot, and to avoid it frying completely, he said it was programmed to shut down more and more of its functions. One of the give aways is apparently if you check in Task Manager, you find the CPU is using nearly all its resources on 'System' rather than any program in particular.

I guess what all this is leading up to is that maybe a reasonably cheap expert is the best solution - I spent a lot of time and more money than I like to think about on anti-spyware programs and the like, and they didn't make any difference in the end. So best of luck, and hope they can sort it out !

Cheers mate, I think you may have hit the nail on the head with the cooling fan idea. For the last few months the fan had been really noisy and kicking in and out all the time, loud enough to hear clearly. I took off the PC cover and the fan and CPU cooler bit were caked in dust so I took the hoover to it. Since I hoovered the thing the noise has stopped completely. I thought that was good news but I reckon I have broken it that's why it is silent now.

Task manager shows explorer.exe running 99% CPU constantly.

I think I'm getting close to cracking this problem now, thanks for all your help guys, really appreciate it. I feel more confident giving it to the PC doc when I can offer a probable cause rather than giving him the PC with a blank look on my face and a blank cheque for him to make up any problem he sees fit!!

Looking forward to getting back in the cab soon!

Spywere problems????

Go get a program called Adaware Se run it the reboot into safe mode then do a full scan.

Before you do all that get the latest update manually.

My girlfriend did lol and she found over 49000 items.

I run it everyday and find atleast 8 items everyday :o

I have got someone coming around tomorrow to look at the PC. It's one of the other dads at my kids school who is a PC doc by day so hopefully I won't get ripped off. Only problem is I have had to delete my vast err artistic photography collection of the female form in all its many guises as it's someone I know snooping round my machine!!

He seems to think it's a Virus, will let you know the result.

I agree with Stewart about local shops. Had a sick lap top (Acer) from Comet - they kept it 6 weeks, charged £24.99 as it was a software prob in the end ( a video card problem). In despair I took it to a local shop, paid £40 for a complete re-jig (had to unsolder the battery connection to allow the machine to die, before resurrection with a fresh format and re-installation of software). All for £40 quid and 24 hours only. To give Comet credit, when I complained, they repaid me the £40.

Note that Aldi are selling a high spec base unit for £3999 on Valentine's Day - wouldn't that be a nice present from her indoors? You could drop the odd hint!

Unfortunately that is probably the 'source' of your Virus (In more ways than one!).

Cheers Alantaylor61, that is very, very kind of you. I will see how I get on with repair man due round today.
It is warming to see how so many people rally round to help out, great stuff and thanks to all who have helped.

Probably right about the 'art' collection causing the virus, best lay off the female photographic material, but there's just so much of it out there! damn the internet!

reading threads like these really restore my faith in humanity, just goes to show there are decent folk out there, i agree too with an earlier poster about pc world, not reccomended at all, they charge megga bucks, i have to say KRS or any train sim for that matter has to be better than suffering eastenders!!
hope you get it sorted jimmy.

Bad news is I can't reinstall Rail Simulator!!! When I start the installer I keep getting a message saying unable to configure Microsoft (R).net whatever that means, can anyone help??
