Hmmm i think something has gone wrong with the disks? My WDC is 500 gb so how comes its saying the Maxtor one is?

Dunno about haveing Vista and RS on the sata drive as the last time i did the hard drive was doing funny things like makeing powering down noises and clicking.
Thats the reason why i formatted in the 1st place.

Im running Rail sim on quite an old system now but on Windows XP.

Wait till service pack 1 is out for Vista should be within 2 months, as it's supposed to make Vista more game friendly

I think the fast format was what the problem was.

For some reason thats what the only format way it has

i have found that diskeeper 2008 pro (even though this costs) is invaluable in keeping your disks defragged. Instead of the one that comes with Windows.

Or AusLogic's disk defrag which is far better than the bog standard one you get with windows and bonus it's free!

I just swapped my Pentium 4 3.2gHz Nvidia 7600gt machine for an Intel Quadcore 2.4gHz overclocked to 3.2gHz with an 8800gtx Nvidia video card.

FPS has risen from 25-30 fps on the old machine to 60-250 fps on the new one on a 24inch LCD monitor. Everything maxed.

Operating system is Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

Of interest, the old machine which was dual-booting XP to Vista gave same FPS on both operating systems, RS seems to run fine under Vista.

I dont sugest anyone upgradeing gets a AMD prosessor.

Gonna be getting my self in some debit soon new Intel prosessor proberly a 8800GTS 512MB.

There's nothing wrong with AMD processors in the price range up to about £150, and they represent excellent value for money in the sub-£80 area. If you're upgrading, unless you intend to replace your motherboard as well, you have no choice as to whether to buy an Intel or AMD processor as you are already locked into one or the other. There really isn't much between Intel and AMD for most consumers-- they both produce competitive processors.

A much bigger difference exists in the graphics-card market, one which is regularly swapping sides between nVidia and AMD. Competition between nVidia and AMD (formally ATI) has always been fierce, and it remains so even after about ten years of going head-to-head.

At the moment AMD has the upper hand with the recently released Radeon HD 3x00 series of cards which are more than a match for similarly priced GeForce 8x00 series cards, but nVidia still have the best high-end cards. High-end cards don't really matter though as very few people buy them-- profits are mainly made in the low- and mid-range segment.
