Digital Traction announces new loco.

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Could you explain, please, what exactly you think that my and AndiS's attitude is such that you find it "objectionable"? It is one thing to criticise a commercial product: quite another to criticise a person's attitude.
However, having seen what Matt was showing yesterday with the narrow gauge stuff at the UKTSlive show at Leamington I think there is clearly great potential in RS.
I have not denied that there is potential in Rail Simulator: if I did not believe that, I should not post in these fora. What is, however, quite apparent is that that potential can only be fulfilled if and when all of the critical issues are fully addressed.

Never mind all of that,

'In his spare time, James enjoys photography, philosophy and baking cakes.'

Is this you james? and if so how come you not sent any to us.
We love cake.

best regards

Yes! That's me! I don't have as much spare time in which to bake cakes as I might like, but I could send you an apple flapjack recipe?

Butting in with my 2 cents and in support of Andi and James, if you look down beyond the first two sections (Help for Beginners and General Discussion) there is more of an insight into why many established train simmers are so unhappy with RS and either shelfwaring it or (in my case) selling up on Ebay. There are the signalling and AI issues as extensively documented by Andi and James. In my case it was the sub-MSTS standard route editor and associated obtuse blueprint procedures which made me shout "enough". And I didn't even get as far as trying to install signals! Add to that what is no doubt going to be a complete dog's breakfast with the US version, upgrade packs and patches. A few new items of rolling stock or half finished semi fictional routes are not enough to change my mind.

UKTS can talk it up all they like and show what it does do best at exhibitions - but how do they reconcile that with the fact that established, pro train simming experts who support the hobby and are 100% behind MSTS, Trainz, Zusi etc. are walking away? We had the hype, we all thought RS was going to be the future of train simming but sadly it doesn't look that way, to me at any rate. At best I see it having a niche in the same league as Rail 3D or Eisenbahn Pro, but not world class.

Maybe RSDL can pull some rabbits out the hat and in a few months when the thing is out on budget with one consolidated, patched version it may be worth another look. However I don't think that is going to happen without a major rewrite of the code or (in my particular field of interest) a route editor which combines the best of Surveyor and MSTS while doing away with those ridiculous blueprint requirements.

Orright. This is getting dangerously off topic. The Digital Traction Std 4 looks nifty. Let's not get drawn into a debate about the pros and cons of RS - which, let's face it, nobody's gunna win.

Some of us might score a few points on the RSDL guys, who are intrinsically as captive to the situation as the rest of us, but who are also in the invidious position of having to be nice to people who are highly critical of their project.

Let's acknowledge one thing - we are getting a bunch more support than we got from Kuju with MSTS - and by people who are interested in the product and want to improve it.

So - let's all take a deep breath and get on with our lives.

'Nuff said.

I really struggle to see how so many people can say they are going back to MSTS. It seems to be the private developers that are getting themselves in a tiz that it's not as easy to tinker with as they would have expected. Speaking as a mere 'player' RS has so much more wow factor than MSTS. It has many faults but for a simple user it has so much more at base level than MSTS. Of all the hundreds of routes that came out for the old girl the only one which was really any good and cuts it by todays standards is Great Eastern. In my opinion the rest are dull and boring, take the East Coast Express series, what a load of sh*te! A mildly attractive Kings Cross followed by 100's of miles of featureless empty nothingness and limited locos. That add on came in 2 parts retailing at £24.99 each, thats 50 quid of cr*p that I wasted my money on.
I'm chuffed with RS, give RSDL a break they are trying their best and have done a good job so far.

It's been a long time since I posted on here. As a founder member of Digital Traction, I am dismayed that a discussion about one of our products has lead to a slanging match. Digital Traction is firmly behind Kuju, and we are, indeed, working alongside them to produce items. I'm sorry, gentlemen, but the final point is this; If you don't like RS, don't use it. If you do, do.

I would never go back to MTS1 not now. This S&D sim is brilliant! Well done RSDL
When the patches are out with all the worst bugs sorted people will flock to RailSim :D

I can honestly say that I am enjoying this Sim very much indeed, oh and the new Loco,s from Digital traction are
superb! I will purchase them no problems there! :D

Well I for one cant wait for the new locos to hit the shelves. along with the class 08 they will be a most welcome addition to the stables. Now if someone would like to do a 4F that would indeed be the icing on the cake for me. Just one small point. If I had uninstalled my copy of RS and/or put it up for resale, I wouldnt really have any interest in continued contributions to the Pro/Anti RSD discussion as it really wouldn't concern me any more.
Cheers,
Stewart.

Well I cant wait, and I was one that threw his toys out of the pram and said I was gonna sell up, a few weeks later, a bit of patience and reading and I find the world editor far more flexible than that in MSTS. Thats my view, maybe not others but mine so with the new stock about to come and once I can get my head around the blueprint stuff Im sure it will be a great sim :)

So I take back all I said in early posts, and say grin and bear it, perseverance is the key :) OH and a few :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:

I am currently getting a 403 error at digitaltraction. Is it just me or is there a problem with the site at the moment?
