To Create a New Track Gauge is Impossible!!!

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

To Create a New Track Gauge is Impossible!!!

Post by Reppo »

Hi!

I feel very disappointed.
My main idea was to build routes and rolling material for my country, Chile.
Here we have narrow track of 1 meter and wide track of 1.67 meters, but we haven't standar track of 1.435 meters.
This is so in Argentina, Russia, Spain and very much countrys too.

After a few weeks fighting with the Simulator I think currently that creating narrow or wide special tracks is impossible.

To create regular section of track is very easy, but the problem is the junction.

Please view it:

Setting the Gauge Value in the Track Rules Blueprint doesn't work.

It is not care what is the measure for a new track gauge, junction always appears with 1.435 meters of width.

Please, Adam, Derek, could you tell us something?

Is this a bug?
Will you fix it? When?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry for my english.

From what I remember they said they still need to some work for narrow gauge etc to work and it will be released when its ready. I don't know when that might be though.

Hi all,

We know this is an issue with the mim radius, and it has been addressed in the first patch (in testing now) and due out in January.

The curve has been reduced to a very small number, (5 or 10M not sure exactly of the top of my head) this may create issues but we are still investigating.

As for the creation of the narrow gauge junctions that has been addressed.

For one or two reasons it did not make it into the shipped product. To be honest I do not recall why, I can only say sorry you have to wait till Jan.

regards

Derek

Now that's what I call rather good news.

Very good news 8)

Same as above 8)

Now there is only one thing left out... the ability to do a switch with real shaped rails :)
The squared version with a good texture is "good"... but... i prefer real shaped rails :P

Bye bye

The Rail Simulator junction dressing is built from a rail shape that you give it. As the default track was built with boxed rails, that all that is currently used.

Passing in flat bottom rails instead, certainly has much more desirable results...;)

OK... yesterday i wasn't so clear.. i'll do my best today :)

I have done, 2 weeks ago, a series of tests, to be sure to be able to do a switch with a real shaped rail but everytime was a crash to desktop. Only with a cubic shape i was able to do a switch.

This is the cross section that i'm using into msts from mid 2005 and is taken from a draw done in the sixties...

I think that the problem is when the code try to weld the points to recreate the point blades. It's much simpler to do a blade with only 4 vertices instead of a piece of rail that has 18 vertices ;)

Bremen,

You must also alter the track profile in the track_cap file. The point rails take there info from that file.

I've just had a try and it seems to work fine.

A thing that i have done 2 weeks ago as i have written into that topic ;)
That is the problem.. with a cubic shape no problem.. with a non square shape it's a crash after another...
I have redone a test with the same piece with a little modification.. rs keeps crashing :D

Hi!

Bremen, your problem I still haven't tried to test it.
This night I will do it. Then I tell you.

Bye

This was my test. Very crudely modelled and textured, but the "non square" look of the point trackwork can be seen :-

Later today, I will repeat the test with a correctly profiled rail cross section and see how it goes.

Bremen, remember that in the track section blueprint there is a value for width of rail in the junction's properties, maybe you can solve your problem entering a different number. It's just a idea. I will test to night.

Ok.. i have solved it :)
The rail shape for the switches have to be perfectly symmetrical... mine has one vertex that wasn't on the same plane as the other on the other side :D

So... to do a summary... now it's possible to do tracks with real shape and with the patch we can do all the curves and gauge we want... now is good :)

There is only the distant mountain absence to be solved and it's time to start the work :D

Bye Bye
