Unable to put reverser into forward position

I've had Rail Simulator working fine until this evening but now, whichever scenario I choose, I am unable to change the position of the reverser. It sits in the 'N' position and pressing the 'S' key simply makes it flick momentarily to 'R' and then back to 'N'. Pressing the 'A' key opens the throttle but doesn't release the brakes.
It's tear my hair out time. Anyone have any thoughts on this problem?

The W key puts it forward just hold it down. The ; key releases the brakes and the ' increases them.

Well that's solved the reverser problem but the brake keys don't seem to do anything. My understanding is that the 'A' key is for accelaration, 'D' is for braking and 'S' is for direction. The 'W', ':' and ',' keys were the ones used for MSTS so I'm surprised that they work on Rail Simulator.
My problem now is that when I open the doors for passengers to alight they don't close again and the game freezes.
Perhaps it's time to go back to MSTS?

Apologies. The brake keys do work - on the Class 43 anyway. Many thanks for the advice.
Now to try to solve the problem with the passengers. Maybe a memory problem so I'll shut everything down and run Rail Simulator on its own.

You hold the key down, don't you?
I worked that before posting.
It's not MSTS.

I believe a fix is available and highlighted on these forums.

It depends whether you are in 'Simple' control mode as opposed to 'Intermediate' or 'Expert'.
In 'Simple' mode, the Reverser is toggled between Forward and Reverse using the 'S' key alone and the brakes are combined with the Throttle, so are applied using the 'D' key and released using the 'A' key
In 'Intermediate' and 'Expert' modes, you use 'W' and 'S' for the reverser, 'A' and 'D' for the throttle, ' (quote) and ;(apostrophe) for the Train Brakes

I always played in Intermediate mode, and found that for some reason (lack of testing, presumably), the game works by moving the control in the direction pressed for as long as you hold the key, but upon releasing it, the control can move back towards its nearest fixed position, instead of continuing in the direction it was being moved in. That means a brief press of the 'forward' selection only "sticks" if it is held long enough to take it all the way. The same problems apply to throttle positions. I'm sure it has all been mentioned somewhere in the bugs thread.

Many thanks for all your help guys. I finally worked out what I was doing with the controls and now play in 'simple mode' - much easier. At least I know how to use the other controls when I move up to the next level.
Oh - I also installed the patch for 'passengers' so hopefully that's all my problems solved for now.

If you press "F5" for the HUD, you will see that the Forward, Neutral and Reverse positions on the diesel locos use the Reverser % value similar to the steam locos. This means to select Forward the reverser value has to be 100%. If you watch the HUD you will see the reverser % value increasing to 100% as you hold "W". If you release "W" before reaching 100% the reverser will return to neutral.
The problem is worse if you want to go from F to N, you hold down "S" long enough to ensure that the reverser will stay in Neutral and doesn't return to Forward, and end up in Reverse! If you use the HUD display you can watch the reverser value decrease from 100% to 0% at which point you release "S". This is, in my opinion, a strange way of doing it. I would have thought one key press to move the reverser one position in the required direction would be enough!

There are lots of things in RS that seem like a strange way of doing it. I can only assume there were no beta-testers used prior to the game going gold otherwise all these annoying quirks would have been caught. No beta-testers translates tends to translate into a product full of bugs, which indeed it is.

[Yawn]. Congratulations on being the 1000th post to mention this. Whats the point? We know your opinions by now. Now lets move on...

Been thinking about this and maybe there's some benefit with such posts.
We know that if you bang on about how great something is then it creates a backlah even if it is wonderful.
The same is likely to happen in reverse.
It's not unheard of for politicians to place their own hecklers in a crowd to make the opposition look stupid although I'm not suggesting Derek do so
Bet it would work though
