Fly-shunting

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

Fly-shunting

Post by AdamsRadial »

Has anyone got this to work? All of my attempts have the wagons I've uncoupled remaining with the rest of the train, so that when you accelerate and then brake, the loose wagons slow down at the same rate as those attached to the engine. I know they're uncoupled because I can reverse away from them leaving them in the siding, but I can't get them to scoot along the track for a few yards and come to a halt.

ive done it on "in the shuffle" but disconnecting from the loco then using the loco brake - obviously not possible using the steamers, should work whether train brake or loco brake is used shouldnt it?. Ill give it a go and report back.

Hi
I think someone has already posted, that loose waggons just seem to stop, without regard to weight etc.
Cheers

Oh Gosh crikey, No!

I've tried the suggestion about using the loco brakes for fly-shunting, and discovered that they do not work in intermediate controls, or at least, not with the ] and [ keys, so I've posted on the RSD forum to that effect. I assume from other's comments that they work in expert mode.

Someone else has also reminded me that the wagons seem to stop dead when not attached to a train, so they seem to have an inbuilt handbrake. Shame, I was looking forwards to trying to model loose-coupled freight. Perhaps when we've all learned a bit more about the internals of the sim someone will be able to alter the physics.

Are the default wagons fitted or unfitted?

hmm i dont know how you would be able to do fly shunting? Its not like there is a tool where u can go between the loco and wagons and close taps or open taps to do this? seems like all air drains out of wagons as soon as u uncouple.

cheers Adam.

Had a fiddle with the 47 & TEA tanks in didcot yard - they are fitted, can get them to roll a bit if I accelerate the loco to 15mph then slam the loco brakes on 100% then uncouple, any faster causes a crash. The odd thing is that 5 plank wagons seem to behave the same and they are supposed to be unfitted.
