My derailment in the other thread about banking engines was caused by my doing exactly that. Normally I would have clicked on them in the shift-2 camera, but I couldn't get that key to work in the leading engine.

I've seen a couple of posts where people have said these haven't set the points for them even when they've clicked on them. I think I know why. You have to be in an external view for the click to work. You can't click on them through the cab glass

Quite correct. You cannot click on the destination markers whilst in the cab view.

Heh. This explains much! I have to say that I really don't like the way crashes are handled, so this knowledge should help see fewer of them.
