Rail-Simulator.org

General discussion about Rail Simulator that doesn't really fit in to any specific category. A good place to start if you're not sure what category it should fit in to as well.

drwho200, we wish you all the best for your new site. Some here are pretty tired about discussions of how to fund a site and in particular about money which Matt makes or does not make. It is just too easy to get bad feelings when touching such topics.

So please, wait for your site to grow a little before you make comparisons to UKTS. Btw., Matt insists on ZIPs, too.

Yes of course, I was not comparing to UKTS in that respect. You can check out my sites stats at http://www.rail-simulator.org/stats as you can see they are going up and up. I hope the new design is great and I encourage everyone to check out the site every week.

I have uploaded, with Mike Simpsons permission, the KRS BIN Editor v1.0.8 to my site. You can download here: http://www.rail-simulator.org/files/Add-ons I will try to upload new versions of the editor as they come out.

Long way to go im afraid :(

I checked out the main page, then clicked on download files, then clicked on routes etc one at a time. All i get is a directory file, no graphical information at all. Not user friendly yet im afraid, but i know its still a work in progress.

Good luck with it :)

I would imagine that most of the 6TB used by UKTS is swallowed by downloads. Still, the best of luck.

Im at work just now and so dont have access to RS, but can anyone tell me roughly how big the supplied routes were? You have got me wondering how the file sizes compare to other sims.

One thing that I would like to see is a comprehensive 'Guides' section. I tend to get a bit left behind as to what can (and should) be done due to time limitations. For example, it took me ages to find out about MSTSBin simply because I wasnt able to keep my ear to the ground. It would be great to have a definitive source of tutorials etc.

Personally, I have no problem with banner ads, but I cant speak for anyone else. Oh yes, and please steer clear of those that appear right in the middle of the screen obscuring page content.

Under RS\Content\Routes the four files there - which i take to be the 4 default routes, vary between 64MB and 164MB, so not particularly huge. Im not sure though whether that is just the basic track and other stuff is stored elsewhere. A complete route with scenery rolling stock and scenarios I would have thought would be much larger. But who knows ?

Edit later :

I see other folders contain the textures, stations, rolling stock and locos etc, so a complete route is probably going to be somewhere around 1GB i would guess.

So, even zipped up, a complete route package would still be around 400 megs. If 100 people were to download it, you would be looking at around 3 terrabytes or so. Or have I got the maths wrong?

Lets hope it doesnt work out to be that much for everyones sake, but only time will tell I guess. Mind you, if a route is of good quality, I have no major problem with paying a subscription that reflects that quality.

My site will be hosting quality routes! They will be freely available as I can compress the 160MB Folder down to around 30MB in a .rar file. However I will put some form of donation button in order to pay for the bandwith used, I will not charge for any Downloads that are of reasonable size (up to around 100MB with compression).

Apologies, I wasnt tring to cast doubt on the quality of your content, just pointing out that I would be prepared to donate to a site that provided me with something I enjoyed. Sometimes its hard to express exactly what you mean through text only :-?

I will no doubt be popping in regularly. Im particularly interested in your Guides section, cos as previously stated, sometimes I need a tutorial approach to certain things.

Yes, thanks. I understood what you meant but I wasn't sure if everyone else was. :D A new design is in the works and it promises to be great, as my designer has some real skill with sites.

About the guides, I am going to start writing some and they will be translated into Danish as well, (that propably won't help but my 3rd biggesr visitor country it Denmark). I would like writers of guides for other games and MSTS etc. to come forward and PM me with outlines for guides on various features. If you can write any guides please talk to me! I will be uploading them in .pdf and .html form to allow for easy viewing.

I hope that everyone visits my site and likes the new design when it comes out, (soon around 2 weeks). I will have a member system implemented as well and in order to Download files larger than 100MB (thats seriously large routes) you must register. It is free however! But a donation button will be made so please donate just a little towards running costs.

Also any porject developers that are making new routes please PM me if you would like a free website and subdomain of my site, I will set you up a site and make it for you for free, (you may have to place one or two small ads but not very big). I will also create you a subforum of my sites Forum (soon to be released).

Thanks.

No, the same one that was planned when I first posted. It is being made by a designer, the current one is just a free template I have altered and edited. As for banner ads, yes they will be only at the bottom and/or top but I will have a donation button to which users can donate to if they wish to keep costs level. I am going to try getting hold of a Route Today and making it the first ever Custom RS ROute Available for Download, check this thread.

Right so I design a route thats 250mb zipped, I offer it for free for all to download. It appears on here and a few other sites for free (yes I know there is premium membership but if a user doesnt want to pay they can sit in the queue and wait for free) but you will charge people to download it from yours, therefore you will be making profit from my work. This will break virtually every T&C of every file on this site and others.

Good luck with the site but I think you will need to review the above
