In the early years of the 1939-1945, I was in digs with a couple in Harborne, Birmingham. This was a time of strict food rationing and cheese was amongst the items in very short suuply. Our landlady would on occasion cook a large onion, preferably a "Spanish onion" until it was a tender pulp and then add a little cheese. This was served on toast with HP sauce (essential) and was, and is, delicious.
"Onion and cheese on toast with HP garni" Just the thing for cold winter high teas -- try it!
