One for you techy guys:

I have been having an issue with my PC Freezing whilst browsing, or system is idle, i cant unlock it i have to switch off and re boot i have checked windows logs for errors and nothing shows. It seems to be random I will be reding something go click the back button or something and cant do anything no responce from mouse or key board and CTRL ALT DEL Nothing either the system light flickers a few seconds then goes out Any ideas, should I be preparing my self for another new sysytem? I should add all drivers are up to date, and anti virus.

Does the computer remain on? If it is still on and everything is just sitting there then does the mouse cursor still move around? If the mouse isn't moving i.e. everything is frozen then it might be a memory issue. Do you have any programs running when this happens? Sometimes my system can freeze for quite a long time if I don't manage my memory usage properly, it happens when I have large programs like TS, Photoshop and 3DS Max open at the same time. In your case you may want to monitor your memory usage using the memory tab on the task manager. If this isn't the problem then the next best suggestion would probably be to do a system restore, if you can remember a point when this problem didn't exist then you might have a restore point from before then. You could also roll-back updates to your drivers, I believe that drivers tend to be the cause of most system crashes, updates can cause a lot of problems you aren't aware of.

You definitely will not need a whole new system. If it's hardware it's just a case of finding out which bit is failing. I notice you have a GTX550. There are many reports that the 400 and 500 series have issues with the latest drivers. Try rolling your NVidia drivers back to v314.

Although it's unlikely as the PC locks up when not under load, don't discount overheating as being a factor. Check that the fans are actually running, not full of crud. And that any vents in the case aren't blocked.

I agree with John as I have a GTX550 which was really causing problems when I updated the drivers so I backdated mine to v310 and the game runs great.

Moved to open forum since it is not Railwork specific.

You may be able to get some information from the system error logs - though whether the information makes sense is another matter. On Win7, select Start / Control Panel/ System and Security/ Action Center. This shows recent problems which might be reported back to M$. There's also an 'Event Viewer' Start / Control Panel /System and Security / Administrative tools and select 'view event log' link. This will show a variety of logs, most of which will probably just say something started or stopped. You'd need to trawl through to see if there's anything for the date/time relevant.

I think there was some similar log functions on XP, though can't recall specific details.

My PC has shown similar symptoms from time to time. One cause - occurring a few times over quite an extended period ( ie not frequently) was a 'kernel power' fault in the graphics card. I've not yet come to terms with what that actually means :o

Technology is wonderful eh? ( at least, it is when it works.....)

Cheers

Did you physically remove the card and not uninstall the driver beforehand? You should totally uninstall the driver and then re-install the driver that shipped with the card.
