Sorry, I know I'm an old fart, but am I missing something here?

Kind of confused about the question but here's my best answer;

I think meaning that the put down cost for the phone is 'free' before you start but then you pay £42 a month for 2 years to pay the phone and the contract off.

Like I said I'm kind of confused so just ignore me if it's no help

What reads at first like a contradictory statement ("get a jar of jam free for £3") actually means that you get the handset free and are just paying for the contract. For example, if it was an iPhone, which if new costs something like £400+, you would get the iPhone for free and would just pay the 42 quid per month. Hope that helps.

I wouldn't neccessarily call them "gullible".

In short, you can buy the phone cheaper than the total cost of the contract, but depending on your usage, the cost plus calls could work out more expensive.

For people who do use their mobiles a lot, if they want a high spec phone, then this can be a good way of spreading the cost - you know exactly how much you'll be paying over a couple of years.

It all depends on your wants/needs as to whether such a deal is worth it. For me it isn't as I rarely use my mobile.

I have never "paid" for a phone. I have a comprehensive airtime package that every so often allows me to renew the package and upgrade the phone. Next upgrade due in August. Of course the phone cost is rolled into the package but I believe I have a reasonable deal on the package.

As noted above - it depends on your call, text and data usage. I use most of my 1000 minutes each month and a good chunk of the additional 1000 minutes to mobiles. Bron on the other hand users very little airtime but some months comes close to exhausting her data package and text limit.

I don't really see a mobile phone as somthing I would need, it's more a case of somthing I might want, I do have a mobile but I hardly use it the only features I use on it are texting and the ability to be able to phone or be phoned if I am away from home and even that is not used on a regular basis, having said that I could quite easily live without it so therefore I don't need it, I have never understood why some people seem to confuse need with want, I class somthing I need as something that I could not live without, ie food, water and breathing.
