Vista 64 Update Problem

I am just trying out my older machine which runs Vista 64 bit. When I try to use Windows Update it displays a red box and says
Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running.
You may need to restart your computer.
The services are running when I check in Services
Has Microsoft stopped updating Vista :-?
Kind regards James.

I have managed to get past the first error above but it just continually scrolls the green bar. It says windows cannot install updates when you hover over the Windows Update thing in the Notification Area.
I cannot stop it using the Task Manager and have to stop the service in Services.
Kind regards James.

I run Vista 64 on one of my computers, James, and it is still updating as normal.

Thanks Keith.
It has now come up with downloading updates on hovering over the Notification Area after a restart but I have not selected any and it is not on automatic. It was last updated in 2011  It is however very slow considering I have BT Infinity
Kind regards James.
Edit it has now started installing 85 Updates
