Hi all

Just looking forward to a trip north later in the year, which will include a visit to Beamish, I was reminded of a place I visited before in that area (near to the Tanfield Railway) that was quite a significant landmark in Railway Terms.

Did you know that Causey Arch is the oldest single span railway bridge still in existence :o

Did you know that Sheffield Park station is on the Greenwich Meridian, You board the train in the Eastern Hemisphere and within a few seconds of the start of your journey you are in the Western Hemisphere :o

Do you know any interesting railway facts ?

"Before trains, most people kept time by the rising and setting of the sun. With the introduction of railways however, this had to change in order to run to a strict schedule, meaning that they had to create what is known as 'standardised time'. People found that knowing the hour of the day could be useful and began using this form of time."

There is a point in the Channel Tunnel where the 1880, 1974 and 1990 tunnels all converge. Part of the 74 tunnel remains as a section of service tunnel, and the crossing of the original tunnel can be observed.

Thank you to Mr Portillo!
