Microsoft Upgrade to MSN/Skype

Post by TheTazman »

Hi all

I have just received an email (legitimate) from Mircosoft. They say they are retiring the current version of MSN.

"On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You'll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet."

Is this upgrade/change to MSN as good or any worse than the current version. Reason I ask, I have zero intrest in skype. I am happy to stick with the current version for as long as possbile but if it looks totally different in their new version i dont want it.

....and, as per normal, it will all end in tears.

I am not knocking SKYPE as a service, rather I have some trepidation that MS is now involved.

SKYPE meant that my late mother, who resided in a resthome for nearly five years, was able to be kept in direct contact with family overseas and in other parts of the country. We were one of the first, if not the first, to use this service at the home. We took along a notebook computer and used a mobile network modem. Keeping in touch like this brought joy to Mum and to absent family members who were able to see and talk to her.

Reporting back. Upgraded to the new Skype and had it a few months now. And what a pile of .... "coal". I would use harsher but I think you will catch my drift.

As CaptainBazza quoted below "to bring the features of messenger and Skype together".

With MSN as I used it was to notify you when emails arrive into your account. There is now no notification that an email has arrived to your Hotmail/Outlook account... At least not that I have found.

I also found that the transition from MSN to Skype did not work correctly. It did not carry over the categories of the friends lists. Instead I seem to have a clump of contacts ... of whom I have no idea who they are. So I am baffled by that one.

I have the new Skype messenger connected to facebook. It should be showing the online status to another persons facebook account as being online. So far to date. Even if some one does try to contact me from facebook I do not think that Skype is notifying me of a message being sent to me.

I have zero interest in using the Skype / chat side of this new service but maybe someone who has used it could comment on that side.

As in these cases we give my overall rating as: 0/10. Well done MS for messing up something that was not broken. If its not broken don't fix it.

[/end personal rant]

If there are any alternatives to Skype I would be grateful if any one could suggest one please?

Good morning Simon
Slightly off topic but I and Damian were both disappointed with the reveal of X Box One announced on Tuesday
It seems watching TV is now the future of a gaming console :o
We're going to weigh up the pro and cons of Xbox one verses the Playstation 4 which seems to be more games focused
Kind regards Stephen

One very good feature of SKYPE, providing you both have good speed connections, is the sharing of desktops. I found it excellent, and used it successfully, for giving tutorials directly to the 'pupil' on modeling and texturing matters; so much easier than writing it all out per PM or email.

Typical! I spoke too soon. I just tried to log-on to SKYPE and it asked for a full log-in, which I attempted, but it failed and the log-in has gone into a loop cycle which I cannot break! I even rebooted, but that has made no difference. Seems like the Old M$ curse has struck again - what was once good, now made worse by their meddling.

I 'binged' for advice, which was to completely uninstall SKYPE (tricky, the control panel app for adding/uninstalling only did one of two components - to get rid of the other I had to resort to Highjackthis, an excellent utiltiy, via a sys reboot (required) then I reinstalled SKYPE from the latest pre-downloaded MSI file, I fixed the login and account details, and I had retained my
contacts list, too.

This is the second schmozzle I've encountered with SKYPE since it was MS-ified.
