Proud to oblige.
Unfortunately, my 1-0 all the way theory has been thrown out of the window. But, there is no I in TEAM and together everyone achieves more. I hope we can slay a few more demons to rest on the way, but in order to be in a position to challenge the Balrog, we need to play for more than a draw and show our resolve against decent opposition.

Any team that plays only to get a draw and not for the win might as well not play, it's time to stop all this "we only need a draw* nonsense, otherwise failure will always be the outcome.

Well, at least now England seem to have a half-decent, common-sense manager who, although not having the best players in the world will get the best out of what he's got.

Len

Hi
I am by no means a football fan and usually find it very difficult to find anything exciting about the game. This is partly because I tend to watch the 'Big' matches which seem to be very boring with no real enthusiasm from the players. I was very pleased, therefore, to see a lot more action that usual in the Sweden/England match with some of that old-fashioned determination that used to make football very exciting. The wimps that call themselves football players these days (compare with an average rugby match) seem to be more intent on making sure they don't get injured than getting stuck in and the amount of play acting for injuries is just a joke, presumably to try and convince us that they really are trying.
Perhaps it is because we now have a more traditional manager who will get the best from the players, particularly the younger ones, but the England game is getting much more interesting and hopefully the team will not sit back and watch when Rooney gets back ... perhaps it would be better if he was left out

To be honest, it is only when England are playing in a major final that I really watch a game of Football. Obviously, I know just how the game should be played.....
I have a growing sense of 'optimism', and 'belief', that there is a 'remote' possibility that we may actually do well in this tournament. There appears to be some team spirit that I've not seen for a long time, and that factor is crucial.
We need to play for the win in the final group game. If we play for the draw, we will concede nothing more than a free plane ticket home. It doesn't matter if we top the group or finish second, the quarter final is going to be a top team. If we can win that, then in all likelihood we will have to face our demons sooner rather than later.
I don't think we have the time to perfect being solid at the back, so we better make sure we can score more. Controlling the ball and the game might help.
Anyway, forget 1966. 1996 was the only time that we had a record that performed better than the England team, and that performance wasn't so bad either!

Wonder if the England fans will be allowed to sing '10 German bombers' if England meets Germany in the final?

Hi
I think this is the only Football thread on here .... so here's one to task the mind.
Why 3 lions on Englands shirt.... that is to say ...... where does the 3 lions on the Kingdom of England come from.
My wife just suddenly asked the question .... and nobody seems to know the answer.
As far as I can ascertain .... they are actually 3 French leopards .... originally from a shield of six.
Cheers
Jon

Hi
Yes that was where I started too .... but it doesn't explain.... even when you drill down.
I'm guessing there isn't an answer
Cheers

On behalf of the winning nation, can I say thank you we did not do an Italian Job.
I commend the spirit of the team, and in the first half we did not do a bad job. However, in the second half I was completely glued to the screen, and all I saw was an Italian on the ball. Perhaps we should have finished second in the group as usual. Against Spain, we could have let them play possession football by passing the ball to them.
