I think I need to go out and kill a mobile telephone company

I have been with the same mobile wireless telephony company since 1999. I have (and have always had) a monthly contract with them, before they were called by their current (they want to remind me of Oxygen molecules) name. Every e-mail and advertising text I get from them tells me I'm due for an upgrade, and will now (thanks to the end of Moments[TM]) get my new 'phone one month early. Every time I call them, they tell me I've been put on a SIM-card only tariff, and can't have an upgrade. So I 'phoned 100 today feeling more than slightly aggrieved (only slightly aggrieved - I am an ordained cleric, so I have to be a tad pleasant). "Lucy", their very annoyingly up-beat automatic telephony lady immediately told me that "You are due for an upgrade" as soon as she picked up - but when a real person actually answered, I was told I was not, despite all the e-mails, texts and, (blessed be her eyes) Lucy.

I pointed out that I had been their full-contract customer since donkeys were invented, and was still on only the second hand-held mobile telephony unit they had sent me (despite their intended promise to send me a new umathingummaybob every 18 months, as in the original contract).

SO: Now I have a promise of a new ("strokable") 'phone, to arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday.
AND: It'll cost me £1.50 per month less than my current ("Your network is busy") agreement.

I have three questions:
(1) Where is the "Grumpy Old Men thread when I need it?
(2) Why in the Lord's name didn't I make a fuss before? (Take this thought to heart, my brethren)
and
(3) Given that the new 'phone will have an umpity-gigamegagigapixel built-in camera and the capability for immediate upload to the IntraWeb thingy, is "Happy Slapping" still de rigeur amongst the chattering classes? Or am I too late?

David

Good afternoon everyone
Being a complete cheap skate I am the proud owner of a Nokia handset that cost me £4.99
I just top it up each month as needed and currently the credit on my phone account is worth more than the handset :D
Kind regards Stephen

Good on you Stephen,
I'm of the old school as well.

£10 credit lasts me about two months. :-?

I used my phone this morning, but only to wake me up at 7a.m.
The time before that was to take a photograph!

We are all grumpy old men on here.
If you want an upgrade, make sure you are compatible otherwise you will be deleted.
I want to kill every banker, claims management company, debt recovery specialist and the driver of every train that is late. However, after admitting so, I am now on an MI watch list, and will be held indefinitely without trial. And all I did was moan about supermarket leadership. This is not a joke, national security is at stake!

£10 credit on my mobile phone will last me about 6 months,

There is time limit on how long you can go without topping up your credit, before they cut you off, even if you still have credit on your phone :o
It happened to me once when i had £6 odd credit.

Good morning
Just picking up on losing your credit on a pay as you go mobile
With 02 they say to keep the sim active you must make at least one chargable call during 6 Months
I cannot work up any enthusiasm for mobile phones at all ....as long as I can make and receive a call that's all I need
Kind regards Stephen

Until recently, had no interest in smartphones, just made do with hand me down basic phones from the kids. They've now got smartphones (don't give them to me anymore, too valuable, they flog them on ebay to help pay for their next phone!) so decided to take the plunge. Got a good deal on a Samsung Galaxy S2, amazing little gadget. To describe it as a phone is a bit of a misnomer. It's actually a mini computer that can also make and receive calls. Have I betrayed my "grumpy old man status, will I be banned from posting here?

Regards,

Len

Welcome aboard Len.

I've got my phone and a Galaxy Tab for use when out & about. I particularly like it for the large (7") screen for navigation purposes.
