Avira virus alert.

Post by kieranhardy »

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone could work out this odd message i had with Avira about 20 minutes ago.

I wasn't doing anything on the PC but a popup from avira stated this:

'Virus or unwanted program 'TR/Crypt.EPACK.Gen2 [trojan]'
detected in file 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Ad-AwareAdmin.exe.
Action performed: Deny access'

After googling the program it appears to be something quite nasty however what i can't work out is if it was indeed a virus, why would it put itself in the location of another virus scanner, surely that's a bit too obvious? I don't often use Ad-aware to be honest anyway.

I've found nothing on googling Avira and ad-aware with the above file. I've scanned the 'infected' file with 3 different scanners including avira & ad-aware but none find any issues. Could it be likely it's a false positive?

Another question i have is the popup itself. It's not worded as if the virus is there or not, just something was detected and access was blocked? Is there anyone who is a bit more avira literate who knows exactly what that means?

Cheers,

Thanks for the reply,

I have also posted on the avira forums, after some digging i notice there was an engine update on the 30th which lists the above virus.

I was away from the 29th till the 2nd so i'm just wondering if this is possibly a new random false positive perhaps. What does strike me as odd though is why it would take 1 day after updating to notice this and why it would be in a location which isn't even active within a virus scanners destination folder.

I am currently downloading the scanner you just linked, cheers.
