Re: Beer
I will second that I have travelled a bit and loved the China beers especially Tsing Tao and some beers from Brazil too.
Re: Beer
....so there I was. In Essex. County of my birth. Revisiting the holiday resort of my childhood, Walton-on-the-Naze.
Now as a teenager I discovered Ridley's. A fine old Essex brew.
In 2011 ....alas finding a pub that was still open was hard enough in that area. The one within walking distance of where we stayed had been bought by a developer to demolish to make way for an access road to his proposed "green field" 180 home estate.
I ended up buying "Spanish" lager, brewed and bottled in Northampton (as much of what we buy in the Supermarkets actually is ...despite the "ethnic label") and mourned the loss of yet more of our culture.
Luckily my "local" brew is Fullers. I can fully recomend a brewery visit there! Fast becoming one of the last truely independant brewers in the UK. Micro breweries are great but of course don't have the footprint of large brewers.
Having a daughter, rather than a son, the issue of "going to the pub for a pint" hasn't raised it's head.... but how many son's would drink a pint with their Dad nowadays? ...a pint of "fine old English Ale" as my Dad used to joke.

Ye Gods, not seen that advert since the 1950s. It went along with others like:- You`ll wonder where the yellow went...... Murraymints, Murraymints..... The Esso Blee Dooler.... The wrong Musica... Etc Etc.
Who said adverts don`t leave a lasting impression? Regards, Michael

Another cringe-worthy reminder of what used to pass for ale...

On the other hand, for those who couldn't get out to the pub, this is a classic:

Outstanding Ash!
Now somewhere I've got a "Party Seven/Party Four" opener.
I'll post a picture of this antiquity here and the youngsters (that'd be under 45
) can try and guess how it worked! There's a web site about them somewhere.... I'll check that out and post a link too

Re: Beer
Unfortunately Stephen,
Whitbread, after taking over Boddingtons, adulterated the recipe so much in order to make the beer appeal to the least common denominator, resulting in it being a far, far cry from the original Strangeways brew
( They even moved production to South Wales!!!
) That resulted in a need for mass advertising in order to promote their newly created dross to the palate numb and brain dead masses.
At the 13th hour, a Cask version is now produced at Hyde's, across the city from the original site, but despite the skills of this talented Regional Brewer, the Boddies that it makes is still nothing like the original version that I still fondly remember
RIP
