The proposed experiment of "Double British SummerTime".

I’d like to see Double British Summer Time. This involves moving the clocks forward 1 hour ALL year and we'd still have a Summer Time. Thus “Double Summer Time”

I’d like to see a repeat of the 68 to 71 experiment where we had BST ALL year. That is the clocks went forward 1 hour during Winter and stayed that way during Summer too.

The Proposal for “Double British Summer Time” or basically ......just putting the clocks forward 1 hour

Firstly this is NOT a new idea. Check out dates on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Summer_Time and then consider the reported accident statistics. These have always been pivotal to the arguments against. Bottom line is fewer accidents overall with clocks forward.

I’ll run my flag up the mast straight away...... I’m 100% in favour of this for the following reasons, BUT, first though some “obvious facts”. That’s for 90% of us ...but reading comments on the news stories about this......

The amount of daylight you get at any given time of year is directly related to what latitude you live on. Roughly speaking in UK terms you have LESS difference between hours of darkness and hours of daylight the nearer the Equator you live ...and MUCH greater difference in those hours the nearer to the Poles you live. To be clear here I’m talking about the differences between the summer months and the winter months.

“Statin’ the obvious”?! Well I ought to be! .....if you paid attention at school!

So in Real terms Cornwall has more hours of daylight in the Winter than Durness or John O’Groats. Equally Durness or John O’Groats have MORE hours of daylight than Cornwall in the Summer.

As I love both regions equally and have spent Summers in both I know this for a fact and from 1st hand experience. I mention this because “Regional-ism” tends to shout down logic in these arguments.

Consider then various working patterns.

Shift work: three shift patterns, 12 hour shifts, etc.

Traditional “manual” working hours “8 till 4”

Traditional “Office” hours “9 till 5”

....and of course you’ll all tell me what I’ve missed!!! However for all those 150 hour a week merchants I’d point out that I was a Union rep for most of my working life so I’ve heard “more convincing tales” ...and I’d point you to the EU working hours directive 48 HOURS per week.

Why go into that? Well for a start shift workers have ALWAYS been "out of kilt" with the majority of folk and shift pattern vary so it’s hard to quantify the effect on them. However in my experience MOST employers WILL negotiate changes in patterns if the work gets done?

NOW I’ve lived and worked in London all my life, and even here in a 9 till 5 environment I’ve risen in darkness and driven home in darkness.

The ONLY relief to this was during the October 68 to October 71 experiment when BST was bought in during the winter. I have to say my enthusiasm is based on those distant memories. The extra hour before sunset was on MY time rather than “company time” and the later sunset made life a lot more enjoyable.

The 68 to 71 experiment was ONLY to KEEP Summer time all year. There was NO additional Summer Time.

What is now proposed is basically to move both Winter AND Summer time forward. Thus “Double Summer Time”.

Consider too that later sunset means less need for lighting ....err, that’s a bit "tongue in cheek" with the gloomy weather of late that’s had me switching on lights during the day even as far South as London...

However, the fact is that you’d be enjoying lighting at your employer’s expense longer than you would at your expense? :D

Moving to the Summer when we all, regardless of UK region, enjoy longer daylight hours, wouldn’t you welcome more time for yourself and family in the evenings when work is done?

Consider too that some teenagers would ACTUALLY SEE daylight occassionally too.....

Anyway this a real "straw poll" but in lieu of a referendum it's the best you'll get?

Good evening Geoff
Being as I was too late to vote I would have voted for leave the clocks alone
I can remember the experiment and going to school in the dark
However I think there will be more accidents during the mornings
There are more motor vehicles on the roads than the last time the experiment was tried
No matter what they do ref the clocks there are still only 24 Hours in a day
Kind regards Stephen

I want a 25hr day in the summer and a 23hr day in the winter.

Then I can enjoy the Scottish summer for longer.

Easy to tell when it's summer in Scotland - the rain is warm.

I have mixed feelings on this one.

Part of me wants to go for the second option but drop all the bull about "double British summertime" - it essentially is putting us on CET / CEST but the Europe word gets in there and scares the heebie-jeebies out of some people. If it is "Europe" then it must be bad for us.

That option would have worked well for me in my last job and would also work well in the new job. The only downside is it dark later in the morning as far as I can work out. Now I don't like getting up in the dark so currently I have about 6 weeks of real problems in the middle of winter - that would get a lot longer.

Being an hour further ahead of the USA would probably be a disadvantage also for me in work since the bulk of my meetings are with them. Having the extra hour overlap with Singapore would help but on balance I can see myself staying later and losing the benefit of lighter nights to actually get the job done.

Regards

Living in Scotland at the time f the last experiment it was very unpopular for good reasons.

:-? Of course you're spot on here John.

I tried to keep ALL political references out of my post. this is NOT a "Coalition initiative" because it's been done before on many occassions and for different reasons and it's NOT a "European" issue other than the majority of Europe does use that time zone. However once you veer away from the basic scientific aspects any reasoned argument seems to get mired? :(

No Offence Tony but the "Scottish" aspect is likewise a red herring IMHO. Geographically we're talking about latitude differences within the British Isles. Many of the "reported issues" were actually more fear than fact. Indeed the Safety organisations and Environmental observers found factual improvements statistically. STILL the myth of "More Dead School Children" prevails despite statistics showing a reduction in accidents OVERALL. With Energy bills soaring anything that helps reduce energy consumption must help. If we can use less heating or light that has to help people. Of course many folk won't be able to save on heating because of their individual lifestyle/work patterns but extending the use of daylight as much as possible must help most?

In the previous experiment the major factor in accident figure reduction was reportedly due to greater alertness after a nights sleep than that which most folk display when they are tired after a days work.

As far as the "International" aspects are concerned, whilst it's true that the Americas would be an hour "further" displaced, the rest of the World would be an hour "closer". In these days of the internet and e-mail that hardly seems much of a shift?

Still we had no say in the previous experiment and doubtless we'll have none in a future one

Really just interested to see what folk thought. As I said I'm totally for it because I remember very positive aspects of the 68-71 trial.

Huh!!!???

Well having spent time in Quito in Ecuador, which is also almost on the Equator, they too have NO "Daylight Saving Time shifts". It gets light about the same time every day ....and it gets dark about the same time every day, 365. But then it would do on the Equator wouldn't it.

I think the term "Daylight Saving Time" is more useful/meaningful than "Summer Time"?

Well many of you won't remember the previous experiment and I guess that a trial would actually give everyone a chance to see how this would affect them.

Like anything in life there are pro's and con's and each will have to weigh up what wins in their personal experience? However it does make more sense to be in line with the rest of Europe from an economic and travel point of view (IMHO) and personally I really appreciated the longer light evenings in the earlier trial.

Frankly I was surprised to read the vote that ended it in Wiki !?. I don't remember being asked if we should revert back (?) so how our "elected representatives" came to that decision I don't understand. I DO remember that many others liked the switch and were dissappointed when it ended :( .

Still the whole deal smacks of a distraction to me? Something to get us debating whilst they try and slip the next crazy idea through? A standard device of ANY party/government :-?

I spent many years in the Merchant Navy as a Navigating Officer. When in the tropical regions we used to keep the clocks two hours ahead of the sun. By that I mean "noon" would be at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. This also meant the sun would rise and set at 8 o'clock, and not 6. That means you don't waste two hours of daylight in bed in the morning, and have sunlight in the evening, after work. Splicing the mainbrace as the sun went down, and all that.

Double Summer Time was kept in the UK during WW2. It should never have been changed.

No offence, but we're on the Greenwich Meridian (almost).

Therefore we should keep Greenwich Mean Time and be done with all of this faffing about knocking the clocks forward in the Summer.

It's bad enough getting up in the dark in the winter as it is without it being even later.

Ditch BST and stick to GMT is what I say.

I note there is no option to vote for this proposal which makes a lot more sense.

One alternative to changing the clocks would be change the hours we keep. The whole point of Summer time in the first place was to make use of the extra daylight in the summer mornings. We only work 9 to 5 because that's what we do. Just ask shift workers to give the lie to saying that we cannot alter this... And perhaps it might spread the rush hour out a bit, too, making life just a little less stressful, as well!

Why not work 8 til 4 or 7 til 3 in the summer while remaining on 9 til 5 in the winter and then we can stay on GMT all the year round and not confuse computers or commuters, and all the British would be happy too, Scots included!

Lets do what they do in Burma - GMT + 6.30hrs

We'd soon get used to the half hour shift but it would confuse the hell out of foreigners.

Good afternoon everyone
I would be in favour of keeping GMT permanently throughout the year
I believe the construction industry are against the proposed change
Kind regards Stephen
