Snows gone here, mind you we didn't really get that much compared to some. Freezing fog at the moment with temp about -5c.

The snows been really bad in central Scotland. I'm currently in contact with a colleague who after leaving Falkirk at 1.30 pm (6/12/10) has got 6 miles onto the motorway and is now stuck. He has been there now for just over 5 hours without moving. I feel sorry for him.

Well, he's not alone - He is not the only one to have a struggle because of the weather. There are a lot of people who got stuck in their cars overnight, it is on the news. I even never went to the placement last week because of the weather, and today and yesterday too! Everything has been disrupted, and indeed everyone is pulling together to overcome the crisis, and help each other out during big freeze. Transport minister for Scotland was even sorry for the transport disruption.mforeman04 wrote:The snows been really bad in central Scotland. But, the forcast for the next few days is that the gulf stream is blowing in, so we should have a thaw within the next few days. There would be NO snow coming to Central Scotland.
You might want to read this - I suppose everybody is learning that they're not alone to have a struggle due to the big freeze!

Re: Snow Warning: Britain Set For Winter Blast
My car has been frozen solid since thursday.
Starter can't turn the engine.
Not that I would be driving anyway - I can drive in these conditions but I'd only get stuck behind someone who can't.
Most of the problems are being caused by inexperienced drivers spinning their wheels in 1st gear.
Glad I'm retired. Last time I was snowbound I walked to the station and they sent an engine for me!

It was interesting to see the Telegraph contrasting the SE network, with frequent stoppages due to ice on the third rail, with the North Yorkshire Moors which continued with its scheduled services and its steam locos..

Interesting comparison indeed - a modern cool electric train against an old hot steam train.
No prizes for guessing which one won't have problems with ice on the rails.

Re: Snow Warning: Britain Set For Winter Blast
Our local temperatures hit a new high with the lowest temperature recorded so far since 1990 at -11.2 °C at 07:54 on Tuesday 07 December 2010, I thought it was a bit cold waiting for the bus, and they say it will remain well below freezing for another few days yet. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Re: Snow Warning: Britain Set For Winter Blast
Good morning everyone
I purchased 6 bags of Roomheat Smokeless Coal a few weeks ago, and already I've had to ask my coal man to bring another six.
It has been bitterly cold without doubt
On a refreshing note How is this for customer service?
I discovered the grate had lost a few fire bars yesterday so I telephoned the shop where I purchased my stove and they said just pop around and we'll give you a replacment for free
When I went to collect the new grate they said help yourself to a sack of logs
Kind regards Stephen

Army on alert as Britain braced itself for more freezing weather
THE Army was on alert last night as Britain braced itself for more freezing weather. Forecasters warned of heavy snow storms from Sunday Crippling Arctic conditions are again expected to sweep the country from north to south, in the coldest winter for 30 years. Snow will reach southern areas by mid-week. But PM David Cameron promised MPs yesterday: "The military stand ready to help and whatever needs to be done, I guarantee, will be done."

Re: Snow Warning: Britain Set For Winter Blast
Edinburgh and Lanarkshire are paying the army to help clear snow.
Why? Ar'nt we paying for the army already thru out taxes.
Or have the army been privatised while we were not looking.

Erm isn't the army's job to defend the country from attack by other countries?
I'm not convinced snow-clearance is on their job descriptions?
