Better than the summer.

Although the Ben-my_Cree was blown into the link span at Heysham last week in the high winds.

Astonishingly, it is still generally above freezing here - at 60° North Latitude in December! There have been a few overnight frosts, but no snow and no permanent freeze yet.

It's either going to be a really mild winter (to make a change from the two extremely snowy ones we just had) or it's going to suddenly pitch us into -25°C blizzards at the new year (which is roughy what it did when I first arrived here).

Today in the Lakes we have snow on the tops for the second time this year.

Given the unbelievable amount of rain we're having this year, it will probably wash away tomorrow.

As I intimated, the rain did wash away the snow, but we have another fall this morning which is much lower down the mountains. Last week was above 2000ft but this time starts at about 1000ft asl.

Don't know what it means for the near future (swmbo is topping up the freezer as we speak) but at least it isn't 2ft deep outside my house, like it was this time last year.

The week will be dominated by low pressure systems moving over or to the north of the UK and translates to some wet and windy weather at times. However, there should still be some transient ridges of high pressure, especially in the south, allowing some dry interludes. A difficult week of forecasting ahead with positioning and timing issues, particularly from midweek onwards and consequently exactly where and when the heaviest rain will fall. With fronts coming in from the west, western England, Wales and Western Scotland will bear the brunt of the rainfall. Sunshine amounts will follow the opposite trend; below average with the rain in western parts, elsewhere we'll see amounts pretty close to normal. Temperatures will be close to or a bit below normal, with overnight frosts when the winds fall lighter.

Not unfit, but a waste of a light engine move back to London when it is required down at Eastleigh ready for the Bath Spa Express later this week. As 70013 was already at Southall and available it was a simple substitution.

Interestingly both Britannias are currently on shed at Southall
