Yes, that's been the main problem with any 'railway programs' on Australian TV - more like a tourist documentary with very little railway content !

Watch a 60 minute program, and if you're really lucky, you might get 5-10 minutes of railway scenes, often taken from a distance (i.e background scenery).
"Any railway that paints their locomotives such a magnificent shade of red, must be the most superior in the land" (apologies to the late David Jenkinson).

These programmes are based on the original old Bradshaw's Handbook originally issued in 1863.
I have just acquired a facsimile copy as a belated Christmas present to myself!

It is quite small in size -- about 14cm x 18cm -- but with something like 400 pages it is 4 cm thick.

It is not easy to read! Most of the book comprises detailed descriptions of towns interspersed occasionally with brief details of particular routes.

The book actually comprises 4 separate geographical sections, each with its own index and page numbering and you have to skim thorugh the book to see where a section starts. There are a few quite detailed maps of cities, although some of those in the original copy used to make this edition are too far gone to be reproduced. There are also quite a few illustrations of "cultural"! sites, churches, castles etc.

For such a comprehensive reproduction, well printed and presented the book is surprisingly affordable. I paid £9.99 to "Telegraph Books" post and packing included.

If I make sense 50% of the time, that's good; but if I make sense 100% of the time....you should seek professional help.

It's about the possibilities and the impact that the train had.The train made Great Britain reachable for everyone.
The train made employment.

And then came the car and Beeching...

What struck me most is the intelligence of the people on developments in technology and inventions. Architecture.
And what very fine is that many of those issues have been preserved.
