Now I've got over the initial reaction of recoiling in horror, I'll need to see one at work :)

Best bet is to find yourself a vantage point between Birmingham and Crewe for the next couple of days.....
Well, that's me jiggered, then -- a day in delightful South West London followed by another in glittering North Herts...

Ta for the heads-up, anyway.

They use a GE Powerhaul P616 which is a 16 cylinder, 4 stroke engine, based on the Austrian Jenbacher J616, which seems to be mainly used as a static generator. Does have an interesting sound to it, far better than a 66 (but that's not really saying much). Don't know it is was just me, but on the youtube video it sounded a little like a Deltic. Will be nice to hear once actually working hard hauling a train.
Another interesting thing about them is that they have dynamic brakes, something very rare on UK diesel locos, the only others to have them being the 50s, but they were removed along with other fancy stuff at refurbishment (don't know if any of the EDs had rheostatic brakes, and if they could be used when running on diesel). They are also "regenerative" as power can be used for auxiliaries (don't think that's technically regenerative though, as some older EMUs use energy from braking for heating, and nobody says that's regenerative, but it's still good).

batling wrote:Hi,

Some good photos there.

Actually, although they are strange looking things and not exactly aesthetically pleasing, my first thought when faced with the finished article was they're not that bad... still a nasty design in terms of what has been in the past (and I guess what I base my opinions on) and what I think a loco should look like but its not as offensive as I thought it would be now they've had a lick of paint.

Its nicely proportioned and you can tell its based on the Dash 9 designs with the roof and the million access doors!

Ant :D

Actually after seeing the videos I've changed my mind - its just plain horrible! :D
