York - York via Carlisle

Post by 96tommy »

Does anybody know the best way to go from York - York via Carlisle :D
Here is what I had Planned earlier

York - Newcastle - Carlisle - Leeds (Via Settle) - York
York - Newcastle - Carlisle - Manchester - York
York - Edinburgh - Manchester (Via Carlisle) - York

I am hoping to avoid using Arriva Cross Country but I have not had a look to see if that is possible.

If You Can Think Of Any More Routes Please Feel Free To Leave A Comment :D !!

Yours Sincerely
Tommy

I'd almost certainly go via Settle, the fantastic scenery will make up for the extra journey time, you can also download an audio guide for the route from: http://www.settle-carlisle.co.uk. (See audio guide at the top). I did the route on a wet and windy January afternoon and it was still amazing.

If you want ALL of the best scenery try:

York - Leeds – Carlisle (Via Settle) - Edinburgh - York. Although saying this I am unsure what Newcastle to Carlisle is like, however the run up to Edinburgh is certainly worth it if you haven't done it before. Saying this it’s a lot of sitting on trains for one day which is why I’d do the best bit (S&C) first!

If however you forgo the Edinburgh option and you're a fare paying passenger a 'North East Round Robin' may be the best value ticket at £25 (with rail card) or £40 without. http://www.northernrail.org/page/6/41120

Cheers,
Ali

What's your budget and what ticket are you planning to get?

The 'best' route will depend on what traction you like, or if you want to cover a particular line or whatever.

To be honest the fare is such a rip-off you may as well get a North East Rover 4 in 8 as this is approx twice the price but you can travel on 4 days almost unlimited.

Could also go from Carlisle to Lancaster via the coast (Workington/Barrow) then back through Manchester

I go for £2 since my Grandad works for Grand Central and formerly GNER
