Atomic Systems

Many people will be aware of the project to restreamline NRM owned Princess Coronation Class No. 46229 "Duchess of Hamilton" which was sponsored by Steam Railway.

She made her way from Tyseley to York on Monday, hauled by a Class 47 with a rake of 3 coaches.

Horrid waste of money.

Looks great, a piece of railway history reborn.

I think it looks horrible, I've never liked streamlined locos, but still its great to see anything heritage put back on the mainline nowadays.

That's the whole point - it isn't back on the mainline. Its a static exhibit, and that's it.

But it has been restored within clearance limits for the mainline... so perhaps in a few years time we may see it running. No surprise that the museum will want it for static display for a while, she will pull in crowds to the museum. I don't see much point in her being on the mainline just yet anyway, there wouldn't really be a lot of work for her with a lot of other locos out and about at present, and with Tornado having most of the limelight (and eventually 6100) is it not best to wait a bit longer for 6229's mainline debut?

It is nice to finally see one in the flesh again, not my favourite streamliner as i've always thought they look more american in appearance. But it's a part of history.

Now it would be nice if they lined up 34051 with 4468 & 6229. A good display of streamlined/air smoothed cased locos.

It might even be possible to get some enthusiasts to do up one of the preserved King class. but I really hope they don't.

I was under the impression it was streamlined with the intention that it would go mainline in the future.

That's what i mean. Apparently if they built the streamlining to how it originally was they would have clearance issues most places they go. They have slightly modified the streamlining to allow her to go most places. So this would be a hint that she will return to the mainline in years to come.

They could begin restoring the boiler now.

Nobody would notice it was missing.

Two GWR locomotives were streamlined . They were the 4-6-0 "Manorbier Castle" were the 4-6-0 "King Henry VII".

The story goes that GWR Chief Mechanical Engineer C.B. Collett was told to produce a streamlined locomotive by the Board of Directors, worried about technical advances on the rival LMS and LNE railways. Collett, not best pleased by this directive, apparently sent his office boy into Swindon to buy Plasticene. When the lad returned, the CME then stuck bits of the modelling clay on his desktop metal model Castle and sent it to the Works with the order "build that!". The two 4-6-0s were also unusual in having straight rather than curved nameplates - a feature that would only re appear on Hawksworth "Counties" after World War II.

But remember, Dutchess of Southerland is coming out of ticket this year and the chances of it being rushed back through overhaul arnt great, there isnt alot of funding from what I gather and the team that are responsible for it are starting to dwindle in numbers.

Well there must be some funding... her mainline work and visits to the odd railway should have given a bit of cash, along with 80098 earning its keep at other railways. I had heard there wasnt a massive amount that would need to be done on 6233, and she would be back within a couple of years. Even without 6233 there are plenty of locomotives out and about on the mainline, infact more than enough. On the LMS front alone you have 6201, 45407, 45231, 46115, 5690, 48151, and eventually 6100, 44871 & 45305. And to add to that you have about 20 other main line locos from LNER, SR, GWR and BR Standards currently mainline operational. Not enough work for them all!

The NRM site states the exhibition for 6229 will last until 31st Dec 09. In a hopeful world it would be nice to see her enter the works in the new year, but it seems a bit of a waste for all that effort for static display for just 7 months viewing time. Plus as 4472 has bled funds, they would need to raise funds for 6229... again!
