Hull Trains says "Goodbye" to the Class 222

Post by ArrivaTrains »

Well,

Sunday 26th April was officially the last day of HT Class 222 duties. The final set that was in use (222104) is now at Crofton for 4 days undergoing an exam. The crew rosters for HT show only class 180 diagrams now.

As for the 180s, 180113 has been relivered into the new "Neon" scheme ala FGW/TPE, and also is having a "light" interior refresh (new upholstery, power sockets in 1st, new coffee machine). This unit is undergoing testing and mileage runs (for reliability) before it will enter traffic.

The main refurb for the class is at the closing stages of planning now and should include a completely NEW interior when it starts - New Seats, Carpets, Walls, Buffet Counter, Buffet Equipment, Power Sockets throughout (1st and Standard), Wifi (Free) throughout, and possibly new toilets too. In fact, the trains should look "Brand New" when completed. Each refurb will take 3 Months PER UNIT, and when complete, there will be 4 sets in the fleet.

Note: 180113 will be the LAST unit to be FULLY refurbished.

The 180s are a disaster for HT, who have gone from being one of the most reliable operators to surely the least reliable.

On Sunday I was stuck behind one of these awful contraptions all the way from Donny to Hitchin, when the signallers finally stuck it on the slow lines where they belong. It had been losing time all the way from Donny causing us to crawl through Donny, Retford, Grantham and go slow everywhere else. My GC service was about 15 mins late (despite having 15 mins slack) as a result. The disgraced 180 finally limped into King's Cross over 30 late.

Yet when I was on a GC service on just one power car a few weeks ago the journey took 10 mins less than booked.

Sadly we're going to have to get used to these awful things on the ECML with them on potentially HT, NXEC, GN and GC services. Aaarrgghh!!! :(

I have to say from personal expirence, I have to agree with the previous post, last time I was on a 222 it arrived into London on time, and the seating on the unit was extremely comfy for the whole journey, however a month or so ago, I got a 180 into London, it arrived around 15 mins late due to one of the engines having failed.

Surely one engine failing shouldn't make a difference. I've been on a 185 from Newcastle to Leeds before and the coach I was in ran dead for the full journey. It was a little odd to have no noise to be honest

This is a truly retrograde step for Hull Trains and is indicative of the short term thinking that exists in some quarters.

The losers will be passengers, whilst the only winner I can see will be NXEC,

Here's a video, not mine and not great but shows it side on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woBsgvuo-xE.

Does anybody else notice that it sounds like the second coaches engine is dead?

I'm not surprised.

In fact about a month before I got 180109 home from Doncaster I seen it at Cambridge looking as if one of the engines was pretty knackered:

Just out of interest, I have noticed at work recently that Hull Trains has been lingering around the bottom of the daily performance figures.

And what else would you expect when they run the 180s?

Can't blame HT though, they've had the 180s forced on them.
