It might be a little late in the day to get an answer on this but here goes anyway.
Tomorrow I'm planning to travel round the Cumbrian coast and possibly return via the WCML. Now I've looked on thetrainline.com and there is a Preston to Carlisle service via Barrow at 08.42. It's direct so no changing at Barrow. It just seems an odd service to run. i know they do a Manchester Airport - Barrow service but all the way round the coast and on to Carlisle? Seems a bit odd to me.
The website allows me to chose a route and single or return but dosn't give the option of a different, shorter, route back. Is this possible on one ticket or would it need two singles (too expensive I think)
Finally. How would I find out which service I need for the return journey to ensure that it is a Pendolino and not a class 180 or Voyager?
Hope someone can enlighten me.
Best regards
Michael

Re: Timetable information
If you go on http://www.nationalrail.co.uk and enter the journey that you want to make on the WCML you can click to see where each train goes from and to, the ones going to Euston are Pendolinos, Birmingham ones are Voyagers and Manchester services are 180's.
Top Tip to Everybody, DONT use thetrainline, the charge booking fee's, card fees and postage, if you use virgintrains.co.uk its FREE, even if you're not travelling on a Virgin service. I've also found better deals on virgintrains.co.uk than thetrainline.co.uk, not sure how.
Cheers,
Ali

Re: Timetable information
Well, what a lovely day. Not cheap mind but with the sun shining for most of it I'm quite happy. £50.40 for 1 adult & 1 child, Preston - Carlisle via Barrow and back over Shap. A nice run around the coast. The tide out and wading birds feeding on the Morcambe Bay sands. The vast sweep of the Irish sea lapping the shores around Selafield with the bulk of St Bees Head in the distance. The single track section clinging to the edge of the Sea at Parton. All contrasting with the 100mph plus run south over the Westmorland fells in the comfort of a Pendolino.
Not cheap but worth it? I would say so, yes.

Mike,
If you have a few days, then one of the Northern Rail Rovers might be just the 'ticket'.
http://www.northernrail.org/offers/pdfs ... s_2009.pdf.
I had a brilliant 4 days last year on the "North West" one, including 1 day doing your journey (but in the opposite direction), and with a break at Ravenglass to have a jaunt on the Ratty (sadly not included in the price)

Re: Timetable information
If you ever get the chance to go round again consider breaking your journey at Foxfield and nipping over the road to the Prince of Wales. They have their own tipples there including an exellent pint by the name of Flying Bullet. I've caught a few in my time but lived to tell the tale.
Looking forwards to retracing my steps when that large opus you are creating finally hits the streets. An inspriration for a two part activity methinks.

That coast and peaks rover is pretty good value might have to look into that one day when I go back up to uni.
Re: Timetable information
Unfortunately the Preston-Carlisle any permitted ticket is very expensive, this is because no day return is available.
It's actually cheaper to buy to Lockerbie (or Glasgow or Edinburgh!), providing you are returning the same day. This would have cost you £35.55.
With a Family Railcard the cost would only have been £20.15, once the cost of the Railcard is added it's £44.15 but you get 1 year of huge discounts so would save a lot of money in future.
Another alternative would be a North West Rover http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_far ... tails.html
This would have cost you £35 more than you paid but for that extra £35 you could have travelled up and down the North West for an additional 3 days even venturing as far east as Leeds!
Apologies for not being able to save you money as I didn't see this post earlier. For fares advice this is the best place to go, you'd be amazed by some of the savings that you can make!
