Some important advice - NEVER admit to an interest in railways to your colleagues.

That depends which department you go into. I work in Ops Planning in an office full of cranks! In the team I am in enthusiasts are welcomed because of the knowledge that they have (try planning a path for a 142 from Exeter to Glasgow without knowing your way around the network!) Just a word of advice - you will meet some people who have worked on the railway for longer than you have been on the planet, don't be afraid to ask for advice and listen to what they have to say. Graduates have got a bad name in parts of the railway industry due to some individuals who are still wet behind the ears trying to tell someone with 30+ years in how to do their job.
