considering 2 of them together being 10 coaches long.....

i'll be more specific, the 458's are on nerely all Reading services the 442's would'nt be able to work a Reading service due to the platform lengths west of staines and the Transponder placements at reading which iirc the DC platfords would be to short for a 10 car wessy, the 458's fill the platforms as 8 cars.

Modern-day units, I don't mind the 375/377s. But I miss (and preferred) just about every type of Slammer.
The best units by far were the REPs, but I hardly got a chance to go on them. Favourite of those I did use were the 421s.

I doubt they are allowed beyond Virginia Water on that route anyway. They are essentially Intercity EMUs (and one could argue that their success is partly responsible for the proliferation of Intercity MUs, such as the 22x series), and the Reading service is outer suburban. You wouldn't run a 444 on the Windsor lines other than as a diversion either - they're also 5 car units, so are too long for any of the stations in full 10 car formation...

I'm not really sure what your point is. You wouldn't use a 450 set on the Chessington line, nor would they send a 455 to Weymouth...

YES!! So why did SWT decide that the 458s (which at the time broke down a lot) would be better to keep, and that the 444s were are worthy replacement??

Glenn
I thought it was to do with the cost of running them. 444/450 cheaper to use. Plus, using 40 year old traction equipment, spares were probably hard to come by.

I know, the money they spent on buying 444's could've been used to keep the Wessies going!

I've gone for the 458. No experience of the 442, so can't comment on that, but compared to the 455 and 450 that occasionally run the Reading line, the 458 wins hands down every time.

Wokingham station is currently being extended to accomodate 10 cars on the Reading-bound platform.
