On This Day In History

Post by ilovequo »

Hi all

My local paper says under the heading On This Day In History that the last loco was built at Crewe.

I have done some searching as it didnt say which loco and this is what I have found --

"Today in 1958 (15th December) the last steam locomotive was built at Crewe.

It was the BR Standard class 9F No 92250 - the 7331st engine to be built from the beginning."

Just thought I would share that with everyone

A 50+ year working life? That wasn't really that common was it? I was under the impression that 9Fs were designed to last until the late 80s/ early 90s.

Even with the best of intentions, I think the 9Fs would have only been left until the late 70s; maybe 20 years, never thirty. Can you imagine the 9Fs out-doing a 56?
