For me, the HST is a bit of a nostalgia trip. I used to go on them quite a lot in the Dawlish/Devon area when I was a kid so it would be nice to see one in the Birmingham area again. Sorry to go off topic but does anyone know if HSTs call into Birmingham New Street anymore? I used to work in Birmingham and catch the train in but I can't remember seeing any HSTs?DarthMunch wrote:Don't rate HST's.

Re: What do you think is the best train/loco?
For me it has to be the humble Ivatt tank a lot more entertaining on a preserved railway than any duchess or spam can. As far as diesels go then the noise of a class 24 or 25 flat out is difficult to beat.
Tim
P.S. why do people like 158s i can't stand the things they're noisy, uncomfortable, dark and dingy inside the tinted windows make everything out look dull and on the whole like any DMU completely unsuitable for long distance rail travel. I hate traveling on the Cambrian because you have put up with one of those vibrating your innards to bits for 4 hours.

For me it has to be any steam train - even better if it is an A4. lol . 2 A4s double headed would be even better. lol.
If diesel then Class 33s
Where i live the main units are the Class 333s which are not too bad.
As you can see from my profile pic - It is a Class 333 and 45407 The Lancashire Fusilier

Last time I sat in the front coach and by the time the guy got to us before Wolverhamton he'd run out of sandwichesabirm873 wrote: Yes Glenn
They are very comfortable for the 4 hour ride trouble is there is hardly ever a buffet trolley so you cant get snacks and refreshments. However when there is a buffet its a very comfy ride and very enjoyable

Re: What do you think is the best train/loco?
Have a bump
Horses for courses. Many of the older generation would prefer steam or first generation diesel, the younger set would tend towards modern machinery - because it's what we grew up with.
Still, my list?
UK:
Steam:
BR Standard would have to be the Britannias
Ex-LNER, a lovely little J69 Buckjumper on a Jazz train - preferably in GER Blue; or a Neilsen coffee-pot
Ex-LMS? Difficult, as I never had much to do with them, but the Princess Coronations do have the power, the majesty and the elegance;
Ex-GWR, any pannier tank, simply because of their individual shape;
Ex-SR, probably a Schools. Efficient and powerful with an understated elegance.
off the mainstream? Anything on the RH&DR, or the Vale of Rheidol before they painted them like nursery toys
Diesel:
Locomotive: Brush type2 (TOPS 31) - there's just something about them - and along with the 08 shunters, among the longest lived of diesels - athough I have a soft spot for the Class 66...
MU: Technically not an MU, but as a trainset, the HST wins hands down. For a genuine MU, the Cravens 1st generation units - clunky, noisy, cold and rattly, but they had character;
Electric:
Locomotive: Class 89, the Badger. Simply unique.
MU: ex-LSWR bow-front units from the thirties - possibly 2-BIL?
Non-UK:
Steam: DR Class 50 2-10-0 Kriegslokomotiv - or a UP BigBoy, just for being HUGE!
Diesel: Alco RS3
Electric: SNCF 40000 class C-C
