Hi
Over the past few years I have done quite a few steam tours either as passenger or as a steward.
I have decided to do a database to remind me what tours I have done and by which steam train. The database is split in 2. One side shows details of the tour and the other side details of the steam loco and that is where I have hit a problem.
I did The Scarborough Spa last year quite a few times but the second time it was by 6233 Duchess of Sutherland and a Class 47 (yes it was day after it hit a bridge). On a picture I took it has a shed code badge of 1B which was Camden but on 2 websites that I doubled checked with (http://www.britishsteam.com and http://www.railuk.info) it says that 6233 last shed was 8A which was Edge Hill.
Which is correct?
Also on the picture I took of 6233 under the shed code badge it says SC - What does the SC mean?
Cheers for any help
Dave

Re: Confused on shed codes???
The LMS shed code system formed the basis of the system adopted by BR upon nationalisation. You have to remember that 6233 is in LMS livery and is therefore carrying the equivalent LMS shed code (Camden sounds about right though - the LMS codes were subtley changed under BR).
The 'SC' stands for 'Self Cleaning' smokebox, basically a mesh contraption that was used to capture the ash and make it easier to remove. This has probably been replaced with a slightly different design that acts as a spark arrestor.
Regards,
Dan

Re: Confused on shed codes???
Hi Dan
Thanks for the quick reply. As the engine has the shed code of 1A I will put it down as Camden but will add an extra field to the database called notes and add what you have said.
Cheers

Had a rummage and if it's of any interest, in 1952, 1955 and 1959, 46233 was allocated to 5A Crewe
Post-war, the Coronation class loco's were allocated between 1B, 5A, 8A, 12A and 66A, Camden, Crewe, Liverpool, Carlisle and Glasgow.
That was probably the case in LMS days.
1B, Camden, was the shed for LMS Express engines with 1A, Willesden being for freight and local passenger locomotives.

Re: Confused on shed codes???
As John Dibben says 1A was Willesden,
If I remember correctly Camden (1B) closed to steam before Willesden and any remaining Steam locos allocated to Camden were tranfered to Willesden.

To add a bit more in the time frame, she was allocated to 5A Crewe in 1950 according to my records
but not sure before that.
