Booking tickets online

I'm going from Newton Abbot to Swaythling on Thursday for a university open day, and I was wondering if I could still book tickets at this late stage - there will be no time for the tickets to be sent to me. However, once before I recall getting a code and typing it into a machine at the station, giving me the tickets before I get on the train. Is this a possibility at Newton Abbot? (I'm going down to the station tonight anyway). Also, if I did use this method, do I have to get the tickets out of the machine on the day of travel, or could I get them the day before in order for use the next morning?

Any information regarding this is appreciated :)

Thanks,
Tim

You should still be able to book them, may not be as cheap as its a bit late, but you might get something cheaper than just turning up. Also you can use a 'Fast-Ticket' machine to pick them up. You will get a code some thing like WCD56FGH or such which you enter into the machine and it prints off your tickets (you must have the card you paid for the tickets with you) These machines are not at every station but you find them at the bigger ones, such as Sheffield, Doncaster & York etc. You can pick them up anytime, athough they say you cant for the first 3 hours after purchase, but after that anytime before you travel. Personally i always get them a few days before just incase the machine has stopped working on the day i travel.

Hope this helps

Believe they are run by Virgin Trains only

The ticket machines run by EMT (formerly CT version at Loughborough and MML version at Leicester) certainly have a facility for printing tickets that are prebooked.
