In general, the reservations (and hence advance purchase tickets) for trains opens about 3 months before the date of travel.
I find it just pot luck - I recently did Nottingham - Newport (Gwent) and back for £12 with Cross Country. I was looking at fares to Scarborough yesterday, and found that, even by double-tickiting (i.e looking at seperate tickets for the Derby - York leg) there was sod all available. I went onto the NXEC site, and found at least 6 trains from Grantham - York for less than £15 First Class!
I highly reccomend the NXEC site as it happens - they take Solo / Visa Electron cards for a start, and I've found it has a 'thorough' search for all available fares.
Cheers

Re: How do you get the cheap tickets on East Midlands Trains
Most sites are powered by the trainline.com I can't see any £9 tickets from Leicester To London traveling on sat 6th sept arround 8am in morning I e-mailed EMT and they said
"We are still currently waiting to receive confirmation from Network Rail
about what engineering work will be taking place in September. Until we
hear from Network Rail and they confirm our suggested timetable, we can't
release any tickets for sale.
I am sorry that I can't give you an estimate for when these tickets should
be available; the only thing I can advise is to check the website/call
centre on Fridays as this is generally when we release any tickets"
So how did you get your £9 ticket for 6th sept JSReeves86 did you use a differnt website
