I'm confused about the formation of Class 165s and 166s.
On the GWML, I take it the suburban services are operated by 3-car 165s. The express services, say, to Hereford/Malvern/Worcester are operated by 3-car 166s. Why is it then do I sometimes see 2-car 165s? Which diagrams are the 2-car 165s used on?
Cheers for any help.

At the moment the express services to Hereford, Malvern and Worcester are a couple of HSTs both ways, otherwise they're Adalantes.photons66 wrote:I'm confused about the formation of Class 165s and 166s.

There are also a small number of 3-car 166 services, though I did see a 2-car set go through Evesham a week or so ago.

Re: Confused about Turbos
I think I understand where the confusion is here as regards formations.
Class 165/1s are used by FGW. 165101-117 are 3 car units, whereas 165118-137 are 2 car units.
Class 166s are all 3 cars.
The difference is that 166s are carpeted throughout and have air-conditioning, which 165s lack.

Re: Confused about Turbos
Turbos are used to increase the power of an internal combustion engine, by increasing the pressure of the air entering the cylinders - more air => more oxygen => more efficient combustion => more power for a given amount of fuel...

Re: Confused about Turbos
As far as I know, 165s run Slow services out of Paddington to Reading and Greenford & Basingstoke - Reading services whereby 166s are used on longer distance, eg Oxford & the Gatwick -> Reading - however when the Gat-Read starts at Shalford, a 165 may be subbed in.
I think formation tends to vary.. Bas-Read tends to be 2 car IIRC and Gatwick-Reading (inc when it starts at Shalford) is normally 3 car. Can't accurately comment on other services but from what i can see at Reading, the 166s often work in pairs.
