Atomic Systems

I find this picture taken at the Lochty private railway very sad. When you think of the feats the A4's did and their prestige in their heyday then to see one on a single tracked rust and weed covered railway makes me very sad. How the mighty have tumbled.

Sad at the time, yes. But that locomotive is now active on the main line again and is currently at LNWR Crewe having some fettling done for the remaining time on its boiler ticket.

It is now based back in Scotland as well.

How can it be both in Crewe and Scotland? It's at crewe but will be going to scotland.

I swear that looks a bit like it has a face on it crying....I don't think I've grown out of Thomas the tank engine yet!

I heard about that and its good news. I find old trains, closed lines and station very sad. There is a sort of beauty in the sadness though. I like rooting around old railway stuff.

Where about in Scotland is it based?

Thornton Junction if I recall correctly. JonathonAG should be able to give you the location if that is wrong!

I'm sure its Markinch. Thats where it used to be based. Of course Markinch is just a couple of miles from Thorton. The book the picture comes from is about the history of Thronton. It was one of the biggest railway yards in Scotland at one time.

I rember reading it was Thorton Junction. I've also seen from JonathanAG's pics that it's thornton Junction, in the old depot.

Thornton junction, it's there with the great marquess, having moved from the severn valley
