Rare sight in P'boro today

Post by ajax103 »

How often do Central Trains run their services to Birmingham New Street as a double 170 set?

As I was working this morning at P'boro station being based there now, and I saw a double 170 set for Birmingham New Street.

The reason, I'm asking is because you usually only see single 170 sets workng in the Peterborough area.

Did they both had passengers in? One could be hauling a dead unit back to depot. (I/E Failed Air Con, Lights etc)

I presume both were in service as the leading cab had the destination lit up as Birmingham New Street.

I didn't get a closer look, as a.) I was working and b.) it was on platform 4 when I had two trains to clean on platforms 2 and 3.

Blimey, people getting excited about Turbostars.....whats the world coming to.. :o

Recommendation - watch some videos of the railways from 1800-1995ish, THATS what should be getting you excited, not just random DMUs :P

AFAIK there is a run in the morning from Birmingham to Stansted and Norwich, which runs as a double unit and splits at Ely. I've seen it in the past, and I presume it still runs. Another one that doesn't run now was the Saturdays only Nottingham to Great Yarmouth via Loughborough, which was usually 4 coaches. Other than that, Central running two units coupled is quite rare outside the Centro network. Stock moves with one or more units coupled together are quite common though, for example between the main depots at Tysley and Nottingham to outstations like Cambridge, but generally only one of the units will be in service. The set for the Peterborough to Lincoln service is also taken to and from Peterborough attached to a normal service. Oviously this saves paths and crew.

Reason I asked is because seeing them in a double formation is very rare around my area.

But my favourite trains would have to be the 37's and HST's.

there used to be a doubble set on the 0752 LLS - NRW, but as of the new timetable this is just a single 158/170.

Doubble units on the SSD - BNS route indicated to be a unit failure, so dropping the other set of in BNS for a run to TS. No services are booked doubble units.
