There is always the option of noting it as 'unidentified'

Personally I don't see the fasination with getting the number of each and every vehicle (contraversial)

I completely agree with you there, I think the collection of everyday unit/loco numbers is what give trainspotters a bad name.

Everytime I've told someone that one of my interests is in Railways, they always ask me whether or not I collect numbers. I am very quick to advise them that my interest in railways is mainly in heritage diesel and steam locos, photography, and keeping abreast of developments within the scene.

Exactly, I mention I have a interest in Railways and the first question I get asked is "So you collect numbers then?"

I simply reply that numbers don't interest me as it's the day to day operational running, photography and of course MSTS with UKTS, :D

Spot on about the number collectors, i was on the Buffer Puffer 4.1 tour a couple of months back (my 1st diesel tour) and was amused by the spotters collecting the numbers of every possible networker or electrostar, it was like railway bingo! Still alcohol was on sale from the buffet trolley which saved the day :drinking:

Whenever you say you are in to trains or the railways, you are automaticly classfied as a geek - and anorach - and "boring old fart" (being 21, not old...) lol - but you are always tarred with same brush.

I personally find people who write dwon numbers of each trains, to BE "oh my god - thats sad" BUT at the end of the day - each to their own> if you wana take numbers of trains, or if you dont wana do that and just take pics, let everybody do waht they want, and get on with what you get on with. if anybody moans, tough! they dont have to join in, do they? :)
