First Great Western - ruined my day

Post by carlwestwood »

Went to Cardiff for the afternoon yesterday to take some pictrues.
Decided to get 1F99 the 19:30 FGW back to Fareham and then connections to Barnham and Bognor.. but no. FGW werent having that.

The 19:30 failed at Newport on the incoming service at Newport - or so they said - and said to go to Newport where the service will start at 19:44. So we hopped on the 19:25 FGW HST to Newport, went to the platform and there sat 158778 - as dead as a doughnut. lights off and nobody to be seen.
Ticket office had just shut and no FGW staff to be seen anywhere. The departure board said "ontime" when clearly it was not - by this time it was at least 10 minutes after scheduled departure.
We waited and waited and then a couple of FGW staff (driver and conductor) come up to us and they go down the platform to start up failed 158778. Which it did. So...we eventually departed somwhat slowly 23 minutes late. As we went down the line, we got later and later and later. Guard comes over the PA and says we are encountering technical problems and a unit swap will take place at Bristol Temple Meads.
We arrived at Bristol 28 late and were directed to platform 11 where 158855 stood. Yipee we thought. but no. No driver to be seen. Conductor comes on the PA and says we are awaiting a driver but if you wish to apply for a job with FGW please do so lol!!
anywho, we eventually left Bristol at 21:01 - 39 late. Immediately, i realised there was summt wrong with the engine on 158855. It was really bad. By the time we reached Wetbury - 65 minutes late :x
Was rediculous. But until Salisbury we stayed roughly about 63/64/65 late. After departure from Salisbury the guard come down asking passengers if they had any connection, because we were VERY late and most services beginning to dwindle. He came to us and said that we would have to have Road replacement transport from Fratton back to Bognor.
So upon arrival at Bognor we awaited our Taxi and were back safely tucked up in bed by 00:30 - £50 taxi on behalf of FGW which was the only good bit about the return journey.

BUT to top it all off, when getting off 158855, we realised that futher down the carriage, the seat cushions werent attached to the seats, covers were half hanging off, and arm rests were 'dangling' from seats.. blooming rediculous. This post and its content will be going to FGW i think...

Now thats a good service isnt it.....

Well, at least up in Yorkshire and the North West First TP express strive to be on time, same with Northern Rail.

FGW luckily never had the pleasure to be on one of their services!
I think like Matt I'll stick to Northern Rail

FGW really are bog useless at the minute. Have a look at these:

:o

Granted, the engineering wasn't their fault, but that's a shocking service.

I suffered thanks to FGW a few weeks ago when travelling from Exeter to Penzance - Long story short, the air con in the quiet coach on the HST i was on was bust and it was like sitting in an oven (Good excuse for head out of window when departing stops). The train then terminated at Plymouth due to no driver and we were all told to get on a voyager to go to Penzance (Which was packed but luckily got a seat).

Mind you the FGW train manager was very helpful and came through the HST to ask where we were going to so they could arrange alternative transport. They seem to have good communication skills ... Just no skills to run any service on time.

Hmm maybe this happened because FGW closed some of their depots? Or maybe its because they reduced their fleet size putting more stress on existing units? Or it could be because they're so busy taking carriages out of HSTs they don't maintain their DMU fleet any more? Or maybe its because they took on old 158's and didn't bother to refurbish them? With FGW the possibilities for failure are endless.

As for applying for a job, pull the other one, I feel for every single member of FGW staff that has to endure First Group's mess on a daily basis.

Just Transpennine Express, it doesn't have the 'First' bit to it any more.

Not if you compare them to neighbouring SWT's 159s they aren't!

Notice, SWT are also refurbishing all of their ex-TPE 158s, whereas FGW prefer to leave them be.

Salisbury is a good place to see how good a 158 can be, and how poor they generally are.

It is easier for SWT (about 80% of the fleet comes home every night - a few units are berthed at Exeter & Waterloo), but the gulf is far too wide to be explained by just that.

I think it can also be partly explained by the fact that it's on a principle SWT route, wheras it's a backwater in FGW terms. Anything that's not a HST can go rot...

Maybe the DFT would like to know what is happening as per the posting on railwaycentre.com?

Yup, we get good service up here. The worst ive ever had wasbeing delayed at Manchester for 50 mins because of the dead body that was found on the Huddersfield track a few weeks ago.

Though NT would have made their Lime Street service wait 5 seconds asi ran into the door as it shut. CT ran a little late but from Norwich it cant really be helped...

The way things work these days, I'd have been scared to touch it for fear of attracting the blame of doing the damage in the first place.
