The HST has 5000hp, the 442 has 3300hp, and weighs about 70 tons less.Pompeyfan wrote:ok thanks....
OT: whats better at acclelerating... a 10 car 442 or a hst 2+8
The HST control gear is much more modern too, so I would expect the HST to be quicker off the mark. They're probably pretty much the same in reality, though.

I'd say there would be now contest up to a certain point, the 442 would win hands down. Electrics tend to have much more torque low down (raw power to turn the wheels), regardless of basic hp, but there's be a point where you just wanted to go faster and faster, which I expect would come quite a bit before the 442's 100mph max, and beyond that I think the HST would win.Pompeyfan wrote:OT: whats better at acclelerating... a 10 car 442 or a hst 2+8
A race to 100mph, or to a distance over which both could reach 100 could be very interesting IMHO.

To correct AD's figures, a 10-Wes will produce 3200hp (2.4MW) at rail, whilst a HST has 3500hp (2.64MW) at rail. Assuming empty vehicles (and the 70-tonne figure is fuelled weight for the '43s'), the difference is only 20 tonnes (405t for the 10WES, 425t for the 2+8 HST). Then it becomes a question of Tractive Effort and gearing - and if anyone has the TE curves for Wessies and HSTs, please don't keep quiet about it! I suspect the HST would win overall, but would be behind to begin with, then catch up and overtake as the aerodynamic effects really start to kick in.

id have to dissagree with matt on the fact a 158 cant travell at 100mph whilst i was working for central trains i was in the rear cab of one on a stanstead - liverpool train and we were fastlined out of stafford the guard looked at the speedo which i found suprising to see it read the speed we were travelling and we were at 102 before the driver notched down, saying that we were 10 minutes late and a 3 car formation. Apparently happened on a regular basis untill the 125mph line increase.
