What is the point of "notch 5 departures" from Paddington then ?

Having been a driver at OOC for three years, I know why there is no point.

Don't HST's just slip if you notch 5 them from a stand?

You can notch 5 them from a standing start, and get away without slipping, but it all depends on the railhead conditions, but in this case the same applies to most mainline London terminus stations.

Ah ha! Just going on a conversation I overheard between a relieving driver and the bloke to be relieved at New St warning the new guy not to notch up beyond 3 from the start because the set was slipping badly! This was a couple of years ago now though!

Having been at Reading & Oxford yesterday have to agree with the comments about the new HST engines. They seem to have taken away a bit of there character. Just a shame I was changing batteries and memory card when a "classic" HST was leaving; with a nice clag too!

I got caught up in the disruption trying to catch a train from Maidenhead to Reading at 5.20pm.... My train was cancelled, but on the plus side as there were a couple empty HST's on Maidenhead station by this time they sent one back to Reading and I got something other than a 165/6 or 180 to travel on.

Earlier that same week services to London were affected in the morning due to a firearms incident on a Paddington to Reading service, police all over Reading station and 4 platforms closed for safety reasons as the police waited for the train to arrive.

I'm surprised they have an archaic control system that has notches.

Surely the speed restrictions over the station throat would make a "wang it open in the platform" driving style a bit pointless?

I'm sure it is - if you're driving an up train from Bristol Parkway. Full power in the platform at Paddington might be entertaining, but it would then risk a derailment by speeding through the pointwork. How very entertaining that would be.

You still can at the moment as aren't all if not most of MML's HST's still Valenta's? Anthough gone have the days when they used to stop HST's at Duffield!

MML have about 4 Valenta powercars, most are VP185s.
