A level crossing near me closes the barriers when the train is about 2 miles away. I never have, but could easily pass over the track three or four times (walking) without being run down.
And thats where so many ill informed people fall into the trap and lose thier lifes.

To Joe Public, 2 miles seems ages away but a train traveling at 100mph can be on top of you within 30-45 seconds. I get asked daily by motorists why we cant open the gates in between trains despite the fact the trains are only a few signal sections apart.

And the reason gates are shut miles in advance is A: to prevent delays to services and B: On average trains travelling at speed need 1.25 miles to stop short of any obstruction.

That's because the distant signal to the signal protecting that level crossing will be a fair distance away....
I know that, but like danielw2599 said, you're average Joe person doesn't.

Dunno though - doesn't sound like there has been any fatalities?
But then at the time of writing, reports are very sketchy.

Does anybody think that the level crossing film will ever get shown on TV, every time it is supposed to be shown there seems to be another level crossing incident - there is a moral to that story!!!

Hopefully it will get shown, i was in the audience when it was first supposed to be shown and the footage is quite spectacular, its just a shame that Jeremy Clarkson tries to make fun of it

I would guess that due to the Grayrigg incident this evening, that the BBC will probably postpone it again.

Another week another level crossing incident.

It's time a more common sense approach was adopted and the film was shown once and for all before another incident occurs.

Yeah read it on TeleText this afternoon. BBC were deciding if they were going to pull it again but decided to go ahead with it.

Yes there is a link and there are these little gems in that story
Carol Bell, vice-chair of the Safe Trains Action Group said: "I'm not sure it's a good idea. I do understand the programme itself has been through something like this with Richard Hammond.

"But there's a poor woman who's lost her life, and her family is still injured. I just think it's a bit insensitive at the moment"

And Anthony Smith, chief executive of the rail watchdog Passenger Focus, added: "We need to raise awareness of the issue, but now is not the right time."
On a personal level here (not as a moderator) I think now is exactly the right time. What would those same people say if there was another major level crossing accident this week and a number of passengers were killed ?

Perhaps showing this will convince people how dangerous their actions can be. I still think those Australian public information adverts were very good. The one with the young girl and her mother in the car that gets stuck in traffic was chilling especially since I have a daughter about that age.

I can't help thinking they are almost the perfect thing for the problem - not too extreme to be censored, but still able to make the point crystal clear. I wonder why we aren't following the Aussie lead yet.
