North, South, East, West

Post by jp4712 »

A question on another thread led me to think about some rail-related extremities. I was pondering, where in on Network Rail is the most northerly third rail track (so discounting the Glasgow subway, 10 yards at the NRM etc)? Is it Southport? Similarly, where is the most southerly 25kV overhead? Bizarrely, I suspect one candidate for this accolade could be Heathrow. Most westerly 25kV? My guess would be somewhere on the Ayrshire coast.

Any definitive answers to the above please? Or indeed more questions in this vein?

25kv would be a close call between Heathrow and the Northpole area.

Actually, silly me - the most southerly 25kV these days would be the CTRL.

Reckon Tilbury, possibly, for the most southerly.

Dollands Moor wins that one. (I think Tilbury is further south than North Pole/ Heathrow)

Walton on the Naze is probably the most easterly, but it's possible that Dollands Moor would win that too.

North will be something like Balloch or Milngavie

The most northerly DC electrification on NR is probably the Sunderland branch of Tyne & Wear. The aptly named Southport is probably the most northern 3rd rail.

Thought of that, but was trying to think of one not related to the CTRL.

If you include non-NR I think the most northerly DC traction in the UK will be Hillhead on the Glasgow subway; or overhead DC, a point between West Monkseaton and Monkseaton stations on the Tyne & Wear Metro, just pipping Newcastle Airport.

AC:
North: Speaking Latitudinally, it's near enough a tie between Balloch (N56:00:08) and Helensburgh Central (N56:00:14), but the winner is North Berwick at N56:03:24.
South: I'd nominate the Channel Tunnel, at the point in the middle which marks the border between the UK and France, also the most Easterly. On Network Rail, CTRL at Dollands Moor (NR own CTRL Section 1).

DC 3rd Rail: Most Southerly is obvious - Weymouth.
Most Westerly: West Kirby (appropriately enough).
Interestingly, the most northerly outreach of the DC-electrified lines in the South-East is Chesham (Metropolitan Line), beating even Watford Junction.

For AC overhead thats the most southerly and excluding the CTRL is Selhurst depot (Croydon). used for testing the pantos on 377/2's and 319's

Another is platforms 5 & 6 at Ashford International, domestic platforms with overhead wires.

Shanklin? From a map, Weymouth is probably the most southern, but it's not really that obvious...

NR also has/had some 25kV from Continental Junction to Sandling Tunnel.
