i was just thinking last night and posted this on another forum.. however id love to know other peoples thoughts on loco names that should be returned to current active loco's


id love to see the GNER HST power car fleet names replaced with the names of the LNER A4 steam loco's

id love to see the former CME's names back on locomotives..

and id love to see the names of the Type 4 prototype locomotives ie. lion, falcon etc... applied on still operational class 47's ie the DRS locomotives.


what about you... what names would you like to be seen again non the mainline...



also what about if you were to name the 3 Fastline class 56 loco's with a group theme naming... what would you pick?

Pretty much all of the 50's names, they were real names, although stolen off Warships. Ironically was it not 'Invincible' that was not so invincible and crashed?

Nimbus - (Simple because it sounds cool, off a Race Horse if I remember correctly, and a Deltic).

Of course you can't go sticking these names on any old train, calling a 170 Dreadnaught might look a bit funny...

Although they're just off the top of my head and my knowledge of steam loco names is stuck to about 3 (Flying Scotsman, Mallard and SNG). I always think its quite nice to name a loco after a place on its regular route, such as The City of Edinburgh but if my memory serves me right there used to be a class 87 called 'The Clothes Show Live' or something, bit of a joke.

Id have to say that names should be applied to hst's, 20's, 47's, 57's, 66's, 67's at a push maybe meridians but i dont think the names would relly befit a demu... not thats there is anything wrong with DEMU's

however soneone on the other forum i posted this said they wouldnt like to see names like "Sir Richard Branson", "Chistopher Garret", "Moir Lockhead", "Ed Burkhart" etc names on loco's wouldt be liked however i think given that these are the BIG names from Privitaised British Railways i think we will see them on loco's at some point in the not too distant future...

Return the original class 60s names. Geographical features and people of note, real names for locos!

I think railway men and women who have done some quite amazing things should be rewarded with a named loco, if they wanted.

What loco would you choose if one were to be named after you? I don't know if I'd want my name on anything that’s about at the moment, although maybe a HST powercar or class 91 would be nice. Railways lost its romance when Locos and Carriages gave way to Multiple Units.

you still have freight loco's.. and loco's owned by the likes of FM Rail.. providing you wanted it on a mainline engine.

50s had/have a fabulous sequence of names (until they ruined it with 50007). I like the names applied to Mr Bulleid's light pacifics, too, particularly the west countries.

Also agree that 60s had good names to start with, as did 92s.

If anything was to be named after me, then it would have to be a 60 of the stuff that's still knocking around. And they were named after people to begin with. Failing that, a 92.

i dont think that loco names these days has the same nostalgia as it did in the days of staem and early br,

But i would have to say the class 50's name series would be nice to see again

I don't think it helps when some locos have had more names than Prince!

I like the old battleship names, Royal Sovereign, Reknown, Dreadnaught, Invincible, Victory and the like. Not very PC nowadays though.

It is all part of the industry that has sprung up to make us all feel guilty about things that went on hundreds of years ago. We still get loads of garbage in the press from people who have far too much time on their hands and get too much funding from public money.

I don't want to divert this thread but we still get regular "demands" that the City of Bristol apologies for the role it played in the slave trade. So far this has not happened but it always opens up bad feelings. An insignificant band (to me as a Bristolian) called Massive Attack refused to play at the Bristol Colston Hall due to the person it was named after being involved with the slave trade. Do I care ? Not in the slightest.

Of course the whole deal of trying to make people feel guilty and apologise to then extract compensation. My ancestors never even came from Bristol so why I as a resident should allow my council to apologise for something my ancestors had no part in is beyond me

I think you should lead a boycott of the works of Massive Attack on the grounds they are sizeist then!

Does anyone know if the names "The Sapper" and "Atlas" are in use at the moment?

I'd like to see First Great Western rename their entire HST fleet with the Class 52 Westen names.
