shame to see 2 of the last 73's in semi/passenger service lost however good to see them kept in the rail industry on the mainline...

Yep, they've still got 960012, and do they still use 3417 on driver training runs? Is it still at BoMo depot?
442s can rescue each other, and 421s can rescue 442s, but its just a matter of numbers and where. What with there being tons of 450s & 444s, rescue isn't really a problem, not though from my experience do they fail that much? The 73 will probably used for driver training with one of the Lymington Slammers after the Pig goes. I hope they keep 73109.

SG - a 10-Wes formation is the equivalent of a 4-REP. The REPs had two motor vehicles of 1200kW each (2400kW total), whilst the single motor vehicle in a WES is only 1200kW. The performance differential of the two is reduced by the REP being designed to push-pull around up to a pair of 4-TCs.
It's not that much considering a 12-car Desiro could, if the juice was available, use up to 4500kW.

Not quite - a 5WES represents half a 4REP; a 4REP being the equal to double-headed EDs, or a 12-car slammer.salopiangrowler wrote:They could but i wouldnt like the electricity bill for the power used off 1, 5WES to pull another 5WESPompeyfan wrote:ok... but what about driver training... and can't the pigs help each other out?
A 5WES is the equivelent of a 4REP quite some Juice Eater really.
5WES is around 1600 horse power; 4REPs were 3200 h/p.
I should also point out, boys, that SWT have announced, to various staff that Bomo will close to maintenance in Feb, although limited ad-hoc work may be allocated - this could include C4 overhauls on the 458 fleet, which has various units approaching their mileage limits.
The word from on high is that 442s will be handed back to Angel Trains on Febuary 6th, 2007 as the leasing agreement has not, to this point, been renewed. However I am waiting with great interest to see how the company spin the withdrawal of a very popular fleet with the New Forest, Southampton and Basingstoke commuters who are quite rightly very fond of them. They are swift, comfortable and despite their age remarkably comfortable to ride on. And I can forsee further protests from the users on the Pompey road - 450s are the equivalent to VEPs, whereas the 444s that they have become used to are almost (almost) to the standard of a Wessie.
I suspect the press and passengers will take a dim view of what represents a watering of the quality of service SWT have, to this point, been willing to deliver. We are about to see the results of tighter operating margins on the South Western, folks. Companies will only provide a good service so long as they can make money. If they can't they'll prune things back until they can. The next six months will be interesting.
