86 & 87s

Post by NiallGray »

I'm planning a trip up the WCML soon so I can go and visit a few old haunts in Scotland.

Was just wondering is there any chance of me seeing any 86s or 87s on the route or even look out for them as I pass Willesden, Crewe etc?

I know their day has long gone, but I also know one or two are still about.

So, any help appreicated.

There's one class 87 worked round trip M-F, 1651 from London Euston and return to Birmingham New Street. The only way you'll see 86s is on Freightliners, but I couldn't tell you what time you'd see them.

Is that 87 currently doing the job?

An equally damp looking sky at Rowell as 87028 runs downhill with 1M44.
Not always 87 hauled I might add.
It's all about the sound!!! :) (Excluding unit's, electric's, kettles and for now 57's, 66's and 67's)

How would I find out timings for this?

There was a load in Oxley yard (wolverhampton) but you would'nt see them from the WCML(branch),only electrics I've seen at crewe lately is the dumped 92's at Crewe works spur (By steel works signal box).
Wales & Borders(BR) V3.1 status.
Re-released for RW. Hopefully some of you will get it to work this time.

From looking at Don's site (above) a lot, there is 1M44 (southbound mail) which is late afternoon through Oxenholme which is 87 hauled some of the time (though they let the 325s do it by themeselevs at times) , 4m74 is the coatbridge - crewe feightliner usually a pair of 86's - not sure of the timing, and there is an equivalent northbound working about 11am through Oxenhome. If anyone has an up to date copy of freightmaster they may have more info. Pretty slim pickings though.

I think all of the 87s from Oxley are at Long Marston now

Could well be, I havent been past there for a while now. There was a few ex one Anglia 86's there when I last went but that was about march time.

I might just take a gamble one day and see if it's running from Euston. I fancy a run up to Brum and back, even if just to refresh some memories. (I tend to use Kings X these days, longer jounrey but cheaper.)

Mantle Lane is in Coalville and is FM Rail's new base. Was a depot there for many years but shut down and was idle for a long time until fairly recently.
