I would have thought that when Pacers eventually do get replaced, they would make ideal Sandite units.... opinions please?

I think the main driver for replacing pacers will be their awful reliablility. Therefore, using them for Sandite could be disasterous, as running them for 2 months a year will certainly not help reliability- they'd be sitting down all over the place. That of course is a problem with whatever you use for such seasonal trains, but given that pacers are pretty dire when used regularly, they'd be a poor choice IMO.

Isn't it better to use heavy vehicles for sandite trains or does it dont really make a difference?

They should just get a 'shark' and drop the plough to the rail head. :wink:

Ah, Sandite trains. Trains which are timed to run in paths which don't exist, and if they ran to time would end up throwing the entire train plan into disarray. Just as long as one doesn't break down (after 8 months in store) at some critical junction.
They should just get a 'shark' and drop the plough to the rail head.
Better still, the Harsco Grinders. Fire and Brimstone, et al.

yesterday saw an ews 66 hauling a sandite through gateshead(metrocentre) towards Hexham. Will we be seeing 20's or 66's regularly?

I think EWS have got the ECML and part of scotland and the Rest is DRS i dont know about the West country it as a quick glance at the area's.

Carillion 121 on the Cambrian. thats not a sanditite unit is it. It maybe the ultra sonic line tester you saw Machynlleths on the Crewe RHTT diagram and thats a 37, 37 top n tail job.

Actually thinking about it I think you are right,passed it at Mach on friday. It looked like the old heritage style sandite unit but looked too clean inside.

@mattvince

I have some experience of timetabling, and sandite paths are created, but they get removed if they get in the way of anything else - same with all similar trains like maintainance and charter trains. They don't really matter as they don't stick to timetables...unfortunately the same goes for regular freight services - so they can't be accurately timetabled!

From what i can gather and past routine's it will be Daily the Crewe one was. You'll be getting 66's on the EWS trip i dont know if the 20's on the york trip cover Newcastle or turn back at Darlington.
