Freight on the Potrtsmouth direct line.

Post by alexnick »

Hi,

I would like to know if anyone thinks there is regular freight traffic on the Portsmouth direct line. I didn't think there was any, but this afternoon (just before three) I saw tank wagons heading South through Haslemere. I didn't see what was on the front, though. Can anyone tell me what this was, please?

It's the Holybourne tanks, runs Fawley to Holybourne and return via Southampton, Fareham, Havant, Aldershot, Alton (run-round) Holybourne. Haulage is an EWS 66. It used to run via Woking and Basingstoke, but seems to be quicker via the Portsmouth direct (no run-round at Woking).

AFAIK it is the only freight train to use the line.

I catch the train from Chertsey to Acton Central, and I always see about two frieght trains a day passing through Chertsey or Staines... Anyone know much about these, like where their headed to etc..?

Cheers!

Probably 6M44 Eastleigh Yard to Wembley Yard if it's north, and 7Y39 Hoo Junction - Eastleigh Yard if it's south, both Red Sheds.

Well, that's nice to know. I always though I lived on the line with one of the smallest varieties of rolling stock in regular use in Britain. :)

Hehe, well your not as bad as the Portsmouth direct, as that only has 2 freights a day, one each direction.

Chertsey normally sees 6/8 freights a day, all have returns so you'd see the same train again in the other direction - usually the same loco works it. E.g 7Y39 runs down to Eastleigh, and then the same loco will return with 7Y40 north in the evening. You've also got the Gypsum through Chertsey which is a GBRf 66, goes south as 4Y19 at about 3pm ish, sometimes has an interesting Bluebird on it, but normally the same loco will run it for an entire week (I'm getting so bored of seeing 66708/66717 on that train).
